GT vs. Mongoose frame sizes?

Hi all,
I'm in the process of buying my first proper MTB. I've tried on a size L GT Avalanche at my LBS and it was quite a nice fit. I've also been offered a Tyax Elite but it's an M size frame and I won't be able to try it on.
According to their websites, the GT sizing is:
Standover 766.3mm
Top tube 594.87
and the Mongoose is:
Standover 738mm
Top tube 596mm
With only 2cm difference in standover and pretty much the same top tube, I'm thinking the M size Mongoose would be fine. Is this accurate or are there any pitfalls I'm missing? For the record I'm 6 foot tall.
I'd be grateful for any thoughts from you more experienced forumites.
Cheers.

I guess my main concern is that when I adjust the distance from saddle to bottom bracket, the handlebar will be 2-3cm lower on the Mongoose than on the GT. Is this going to make much difference? I'm thinking about pressure on my wrists etc.
Or am I just thinking about this too much? [:)]0
