Repairing a puncture / Changing Inner Tube...

I have never had to change an inner tube before and never had a puncture.
If I did get one whats the quickest and easiest way to fix it so that I can finish my ride? I am guessing just to remove the old inner tube, fit a new one, and replace it??
What tools will I need to make it easy and quicker to do? I don't want to be out on my own some time and not know how to fix a puncture if I get one! I just never worried about this before but realised I should really learn?
Also if I find out the size etc of my wheels will that tell me what type of inner tube to buy? My Bike is a Claude Butler Cape Wrath 2006 model, I can find out the exact details when I get home from work...If you hadn't guessed already I am new to mountain biking and only been out a few times!

Ta da.
You're bike will most likely be a 26" x 2.00.
The 26" bit is the wheel diameter which is definite. The 2.00 bit is the size of the tyre that the tube needs to go in.
There are two types of tube-Schraeder and Presta. It looks to me like your bike has Presta valved tubes.
To fix a puncture you need
Tyre lever x2
Puncture repair kit containing:
Patches
Glue
Chalk
Crayon
Sandpaper
Pump- looks like you will need a Presta compatible pump.
I carry a spare tube on me so I can just put that in and fix the puncture at home.
Read the article above- it should help.
Oh and when you put a new tube in, check the inside of the tyre for thorns etc first otherwise it'll puncture the new tube.
Anyway, any other questions just ask!

Thanks for the awesome reply. I will take a look through that article now. I will just swap the tube whilst I am out and then repair it later. I bought a pump shortly after getting my bike which is definitely compatible. Is it pretty simple to change a tube even the first time you do it?

Umm fairly.
Your tyres may be a little stiff I had a set which were a biaaaaaaatch! to get off one set of rims but on a different set they're easy.
Changing the tube itself is fairly easy, make sure you don't twist or pinch the tube. I had a flat tyre where the tube had twisted, was pumping it up in a closed garage and it exploded inside the tyre which was interesting!

yer way easy just get a puncture repaire kit from halfords that will have everything you need there is no point in buying a new innertube everytime otherwise u will run out of money and there wont be any rubber left in the world lol.0

The reparing part looks easy, But getting the inner tube out and back in is what I need to learn. Maybe I will just practice taking a tube out and putting it back in at home.
Should you remove the tyre completely or can you just take off one side?

Spelling is supposed to be easy, but it would appear someone can't manage it..
Changing a tube/tyre or repairing isn't difficult. i'd suggest taking the front wheel off (as thats easiest to get at) and practicing getting the tube out and replacing it. Get down to halfords and pick up the puncture repair kit of your choice. then get cracking [:)]
And Tsawyer, for the love of god please change your sig! i've found myself looking at your bike at least 5 times today [:D]

make sure you put a little bit of air inside the innertube before you put it in the wheel, it helps keep the shape and prevent pinch flats!0

Candy what bike is that in your sig?
