I bought a Marin Hawk Hill several months back and have been using it on a few light trails and paths round were I live and its been fine. Yesterday I went to Rivington Pike and found myself and the bike wanting. Maybe its my ineptitude on a bike and the lack of skills but I found myself getting kicked about a bit from both ends and the loss of rear wheel traction to up some of the steeper climbs. Would a better set of forks help out??? The bike came with Marzocchi MZ comp I think. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    all mountains?
Best quote ever (pinkbike): "i've heard that Hill pees, deffecates, vomits and masturbates before each race to keep the weight down"
  • The MZs I have on my spare bike are pretty much undapmed, so they do tend to buck you around a bit. What length forks are on there and how much do you want to spend? MX Pros are probably gonna be a big imporovement, or the equivalend RockShox. Toras, I believe.

If you're loosing rear wheel traction on climbs, try shifting your weight a little bit further back or try a slightly more grippy tyre.

The all mountain series of fork would be a good buy.

Not sure what length forks are on there now but had looked at those Rockshox Tora 302 or 318's as they seemed to be around my price band, don't want to go too expensive as otherwise I might as well have just bought a more expensive bike which perhaps I should have. Maybe should have just got the Specialized Rockhopper for œ50 more which had those forks on anyway.
Will have a look at the All Mountains.

Better tyres will help on with grip but its got a lot to do with body positioning. If you're getting knocked about a lot from the front then a new set of forks that can cope would be good. Something like Rebas or the MX Pro SL.

  • The All Mountains might be a bit too much travel for the frame. I'd stick to around 100mm.
