I'm interested in the Conn 88H K CL and the Conn 88H CL.
I was wondering what the difference of the 9" bell to the 8.5" bell makes to the sound and feel of the instrument?
Yes I've registered on a trombone forum and emailed Conn, but am yet to recieve replies.

I'm not sure about the difference in bell size, but good choice with Conn. i have a Conn trumpet and my friend has a Conn Trombone and their both really nice.0

An uneducated guess would be that the sound would be more crisp?
Smaller cone - faster vibration, so I reckon it'd just be a more punchy, thin tone, the 9" being warmer and deeper.

Get a Bach (i think they do trombones)
i have a bach stradavarius trumpet-its mint
Why does a climber climb mount everest? Beacuase it's there0 -
Bach do make trombones, but I want a Conn not a Bach. I much prefer the Conns.0

ok.

I've tried a Conn and a Stradivarius and the Conn is much better, but then again, it all depends on the player. Conn's are right for me, Maybe not you.0

I've decided now which one I want anyway. I want the 88H CL. But I now need to see where is cheapest to buy it. Might even be cheaper from the US? What would be the deal with import tax etc?0
-
How much is it? I don't know much about the weight and size of a trombone etc, but when I bought my Tonic frame for œ300 I paid about œ100 import tax, so keep that in mind.

Sounds nasty. Gonna end up between 1150 and 1300, plus 50 shipping (that's pounds). So it would appear I'm looking at alot of import tax. Might stick with a UK seller.0
-
Yeah, at that cost I'd stick with UK, I mean a lot of people told me I probably would have to pay tax or it would be X amount of money, but there's always the risk you'll get screwed over.
I was looking at getting my Nord piano shipped over here becuase of US prices, but I was getting quoted upwards of œ300 for tax, which completely eliminates any savings.

First of all, buy them from Normans. Best place in the UK really for Conn. I'm not going to explain the differences between the effects of half and inch change in bell size but go for the 8.5". 9 inch bells should be kept to bass trombones really. If you did get the 9" then I don't think you would be as blown away by the Conn, the 8.5" does the job!

Or is that my cat? Meh, both irritate me.

Yeah, I said in my post above that I've chosen the 88H CL - that is the one with the 8.5" bell. I emailed Normans on thursday for a quote, along with a few other companies.
Why a 9" bell for a bass trombone? _Every_ bass trombone I've seen has a 9.5" bell, minimum. The 88H K CL is just an 88H CL with a King 5B bell. A 5B is also a tenor trombone, not a bass.0 -

Based on my experiences with my tuba, a smaller cone gives a shallower crisper sound, whereas a bigger bell gives a warmer more rounded sound.0
