Should I buy an eletric guitar?

I've wanted to learn how to play guitar for years. I've come very close to buying an old fender strat before, I bloody would have done if I'd realised how much it was actually worth[V] Anyway a mate let me have ago on his jackson last night and taught me how to play smoke on the water! And now I really really want one. Anyway I was wondering if it would be easy enough to learn how to play with no proper tuition? Also what would be a decent second hand buy for around œ200? Or is that too much to spend?

Get a Mexican Strat or an Epiphone Les Paul.
And its so much better to learn with tuition. You progress at about twice as fast and don't just end up playing cover songs.

I agree with ddoogie.
Strats still have basically the best body shape, so i'd go for a strat variant.
And get lessons for a while. It really does help.

Dont go epiphone, try and get a tokai strat or tele copy they are the shizzle as good as the real usa fender ones, try ebay. Or try get a squier, but it has to be a korean or japanese one, the new chinese ones are poo, whereas the older ones were actually alright and fairly cheap. http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Images/ ... 061705.jpg - I got this for 260 and its a really good guitar for the money.
As for tuition, i dont think you need it there is so much on the web, video tutorials and all that plus all the books/cd's there are. I know loads of peeps who have taught themselves and with persistence they've got really good. If you try hard enough you can get to a good standard, bit like riding really. Plus all the money you save from teaching yourself can go towards a shiny new amp or guitar

I bought a cheapy Vintage replica SG.
I played for a while, but had no motivation.
I really recommend getting lessons, because I just gave up, since I wasn't getting anywhere.

Hey Liam, yeah www.gak.co.uk seel some cheap good guitars i got an epiphone les paul special from there for œ220 its such a sweet guitar.
I taught myself and its good up to a point because ou have to learn the theory. Which isn't too bad. Start just looking at tabs and get the feel of the guitar by playing covers then when you start to get to know the theory you can start just making stuff up.

Well,I gotthis as my first guitar. I haven't really had much time since I got it to play it really, but I'm going to really start this summer. It looks sweet in my room, and it is a classic.

I had lessons when I was about 8 for a couple of years, but hardly learned anything.
Then I taught myself for the last 4 or so years. I have some massive flaws in my technique, which I am now struggling to get rid of, and my knowledge of theory is practically non existant.
Lessons are good. Even if you only go once a month, it would be quite benificial. I am almost tempted to start lessons again, just for a bit.

you HAVE to learn on acoustic. learning on electric would be like having a full suss as your first bike

What's the point in that? It doesn't make you a better player if you learn on an acoustic. You just end up wanting an electic after a month. The strings are tighter as well so its harsh on n00b fingers.
