Junior Full Sus MTB Options

Hello all [:D]
I'm in need of some help on the above subject. I could just take the easy option and buy a Norco B-Line for my son but I do wonder whether he actually needs a bike that will take that much of a beating. I was wondering if I built one from scratch what could I use as a base for it?
Could I take a small adult frame (maybe a XC?) with 4" > 6" (max) travel and go from there? I'm sure a properly built XC frame from someone like Spesh will still be stronger than he will ever need anyway.
Thinking about air shock and forks so that they can be adjusted easily as he grows and gets heavier? Idea on make and model?
24" wheels.
Hydraulic disc brakes with adjustable levers to bring the lever closer to the grip.
Would a 9 speed rear setup be enough or should it have dual cogs up front?
I'm sure the rest such as stem, bars, crank, peddles, etc can't be that hard to find. Maybe I could just copy the spec of the stuff fitted to the B-Line?
Anyone done this type of project before? Worth doing it or shoudl I just buy the Norco?

He wants a proper bike like his dad has! [:D]
Yes he does want a FS. Budjet is around the price of the B-line i.e. œ1K but obviously the less I spend the better for my bank account! [;)]
He's taken to nicking my Stinky and riding it around our road even though he can't touch the floor on it. The sod even jumps it over one of his ramp.0 -
he'll improve much more though if he gets a hardcore HT, 24's arn't really the best for DH as the don't roll aswell as 26's. if he really does have his heart set on a FS what about something second hand with a fairly small frame such as a 14inch patriot.

At the end of the day if he wants a full sus then that's fine by me. He's to young to be putting any pressure on him about his technique etc. It's all about confidence and fun at his age. It doesn't have to be DH specific like my stinky is. I'd rather it was a more neutral riding position so that he can ride it comfortably on most terrains.0

The B-Line is the only 24" Full Suss stock bike I know of with a respectable spec.
Alternatively (if you really want full suss for XCish stuff) I would get an extra small size XC/AM frame and build it up.
Also assuming that he is light being a junior, you may have to change to softer springs on any spring fork/shock you get.

[useless observation] Surely if he is still young, then 1000 is alot to spend when he is almost certainly going to grow out of it within a few years...[/useless observation]
I know it's not my place to say how you want to spend your money though.
If your willing to spend that much on him, lucky boy!!!![:)][:D][:)]

Other than the Kona that has kindly been posted below I think that's about it. At his age he doesn't need a bike for a specific use e.g. xc , dh etc. FS will compromise his pedalling in certain situations but he loves doing anything on his bike hence why I was thinking about a normal riding position rather than the DH position.
One of the reasons I stated air shock and fork was because he is light but will get heavier so adding more air is simpler and cheaper than swapping springs all the time.0 -

Not useless observations, they are perfectly valid ones! [;)]
At the moment I think the Norco or Kona would be slightly on the big side so he will grow into it. To answer your questions though I'd spend as much in the next four years on him if I bought him a new bike each year. He wrecks what I would call normal kids bikes with cheap dodgy rims and crappy rim brakes etc. I'd rather he had a quality product that can take a fews years of bashing up and still be good enough to pass down to his kid brother who is coming along 2 yrs behind him. Suddenly œ1K doesn't seem to be that expensive really! You are correct though I'm not afraid to spend the money on him though and yes he is a very lucky boy!0 -

If you cant spend your money on your kids then whats it for?[:)]0

If it were my kid, I'd get the stinky. Looks ideal.
Actually, for the money, the stinky spec is really poor.
The same with the Norco B-Line.
For œ1000, you could get so much more for your money than DJ4's and Hayes Soles.

Fair enough. Are you suggesting you could actually build a better spec custom bike for œ1k? Would you like to expand on your comment a little more?0 -
I agree with BTR. For œ1000 you could get better components. How tall is he? I've just built up a bike for my brother as an insurance replacement. The biggest problem was that he's still young (13) so finding a FS frame that he could stand over was difficult. Have a look in the classified adverts on www.southerndownhill.com (you need to be a member on the forum) and you'll find something in there for less than œ1000 that might fit. If he's over 5' 2" he should be ok for an adult sized small frame.

Just read an article in MBUK June 2007 (issue 212) about Ollie Fielder's Slopestyle Mongoose that is based on the Teocali. I also found this article on here as well http://www.mbuk.com/biketestdetails.asp?id=658
Unfortunately they don't sell the slopestyle spec version of it although it may be available for 2008. I wonder if you can get the frameset only and then build the rest. Does anyone know if Ollie's bike is running 24" or 26" wheels? The pic in the mag makes the wheels look small to me. Do you think it could run 24" wheels ok? Put a pair of 4" forks up front it could be a right nice little bike. Don't you think?0 -

Can you be my dad for a week or two? I'm looking at getting hold of a Santa Cruz Blur LT, Marzocchi All Mountain 1 SL fork, full XT drivetrain, Avid Juicy 5 brakes, XM317 on Hope hubs, Easton EA70 finishing kit etc.
That'd be great [:D]

As kind as your offer is my two cause me enough trouble and cost me enough as it is [:D]
Well I took them out to a dealer close to me this weekend and although they didn't have a Stinky 2-4 made up they did have the Shred 2-4 which uses the same wheels and frame. It's a touch on the big side for him but he'll grow into it very quickly given how much he's eating at the moment.
So the eldest will get a Stinky 2-4 and the youngest gets his own Shred 2-00 -
get the stinky 2-4 you know it makes sense!
