Which bank?

So, after putting up with god knows how many mistakes from Lloyds and having to claim back in excess œ400 of charges which were entirely incorrectly placed on my account, I've decided that they can go and royally fu<s></s>ck themselves.

Anyway, I need to open a new student account, and I've heard good things about HSBC. Does anyone know what they are like, or is anyone happy with another bank which I could consider?

I'm happy with HSBC, and they have that new-fangled interbob banking, high interest on the interbob account, but instant transfer to the current account too.

I used to have an HSBC account years ago (when it was Midland) and I was horribly frustrated at having to fill in a form when i put money in. I've been with halifax for about 7 years now though. I have a current account, ISA, savings account and a credit card with them. all good.

    They can, and they have.

    How I hear you ask?

Well, about 2 years ago they offered me a bonus package with a monthly charge of œ7 for mobile phone insurance and AA car cover. Which I declined. I did however, accept the œ50 OD facility they were offering. I was still planning on using my old account for about 2 weeks just so i could finish some stuff up before I transferred everything to my new account.
Despite the fact that I didn't want the extra facilities and the extra charge they decided to put it on there anyway, and made me Over drawn because of it. No problem though, because I have an over draft right...Well no, they decided not to give me an over draft even though I had conformation that they had set one up.
I then used a cheque from the account, hoping to use my new over draft. Which of coarse bounced. Anyway, I faced like œ75 worth of charges. I went in twice to sort it out and they basically told me to fu<s></s>ck off. So, I went in with my dad, and they sorted it out within minutes. Bunch of cu<s></s>nts they really are.

I have been with HSBC for about 20 years ( since they were midland bank )and i reckon go with them.
They have always treated me fairly, and actually advised against taking out loans and expensive mortgages with them. They have refunded excess overdraft charges when i asked them to, and never made a mess of anything.
Only thing against them is that they have a call centre in a foreign country where you can't understand what the hell they are all saying. It's in bloody scotland !!!!

I've been with the Yorkshire Bank since I was 15, so that's exactly 15 years then.

No real problems, and any going overdrawn was always my fault.

    hsbc..

œ2k free overdraught on their normal current account.

and i've got it to go online too, so i can track it.

Failing that, i have a lloyds account too, and the only problem of not getting a statement at all from them, a savings current account works well.

I'm with Barclay's, interest free overdraft to œ1,500 on my student account. When it becomes a graduate account in a few weeks that's extended to œ3,000 interest free but I'm not going to use it. They accidentally gave me the upgrade last year even though I'd not graduated.

I've had no bank charges in the space of the 4 years I've been with them even though I went over my overdraft limit once. Also when it comes to cheques I've got same day banking! Yesterday I banked a cheque from Raleigh at 4pm, by 5:30pm it had cleared.

Plus the usual online banking malarkey, seems to be the most secure I've come across and the most straight forward. Instant transfer between any of your accounts and to other peoples accounts too if need be.

Erm, I have sort of various bank accounts. Nationwide (the building society) are pretty good. Barclays have been excellent for a current account that's accessible world wide. Lloyds are sh<s></s>it.

I forgot about how good Barclay's are worldwide, whilst I was in the US I could easily take out cash from any cash machine with virtually no charges. Bank of America withdrawals were free.

I need to look into that before I go to Israel.

It's a shame they are rubbish at home though...

I've used Halifax since I binned Barclay's 7 years ago, never had a problem with them and they seem to be pretty helpful on the occasions I've had to speak to them. Although I think the bloke in the advert is a tw<s></s>at.
