Bike advice

I know it is a common question but it would really help if someone could offer some advice on buying a new bike.
I like road riding and done a few miles in the past and would like to start again, but i am also keen to get into off roading(used to be heavily into bmx's years ago.)
My budget is anything upto about œ800.
Any help would be gladly received.
Thanks in advance

I have a spesh rockhopper and it is perfect for off-roading if you are just getting back into biking. For road use you may be better off buying a second set of wheels with some road tyres fitted. Also, look for a bike that comes with lockout on the front fork as this makes road riding far easier.Specialized Rockhopper '07
