I'm heading up to Scotland for a week of riding the 7stanes trails from the 1st-8th july.
I'd heard something about Ae's trail and the omega man section?
the plan is
camp in dumfries or dalbeattie and from there drive to and ride:
kirroughtree
Mabie
Dalbeattie
Ae

then drive over n camp in peebles and ride glentress. any thoughts on these places?
gonna ride red and black xc trails. DH if it looks like we won't trash our bikes / air shocks

are there any other great trails to ride within those areas or anything we should change?
many thanks

Sounds like a great plan, doing something very similar in September for the World Champs. There are a few more trails that are worth a look other than the 7stanes trails, I plan to do some of these two, Laggon and Carron Valley Trails.
Found most of them listed on the following site:

I'm heading to kirroughtree and glentress in mid july, being a bit of a newcomer to XC riding, do you think I will find the red routes too difficult?

Nar you should be okay, just take it easy. spend the whole day on it if needs be.
Only thing i'd say is, if your not sure of something, dont go nuts and hurt yourself. Its a lond limp back to the car park!
    McMoab is great fun.

We are heading out for a 7stanes week from the 18th-25th August. Did the same thing last year and it was amazing.

Sounds like a great week of riding. It would be worth riding the trails at innerleithen whilst you are in peebles, just 10 minutes away. The Caddon Bank descent is one of the best I've ridden.

Ae downhill is pretty crazy. The xc at Ae is pretty good with a few good sized drops/jumps thrown in. Innerleithen is definately worth a visit as already said. I love living 20 minutes away from the tweed valley!

Carron valley is not particularly spectacular or big/challenging. Laggan is supposed to be very good but is quite a hike up from the borders.

Kirroughtree is spectacular for general trail riding.
Glentress and inners go without saying; they're awsome.

But for only a week, stick to the man-made trails i.e 7 stanes.
... but just in case you were considering it, I wouldn't bother with Glentrool or Newcastleton.

Went to Glentress last summer and it was an awesome place to ride. I didnt have time to ride the black route but the red was excellent. The long uphill ride up to the top of the singletrack is worth it as there as you ride it all the way back down to the carpark virtually. quality of the trail is top notch and theres lots of berms, jumps, small drops and fast singletrack to keep you on your toes. The freeride area is good aswell, if your into that kind of thing, with a range of stuff of varying difficulties. Innerleithen is about 5 miles down the road an has a great downhill track. I would reccommend both and i would definately try and get to AE and Mabie, i havn't been there yet but they both are highly rated.

*Steelo: My Dad was in the same situation when we went last year as he was a complete novice to riding those type of trails, but he managed alright and thoroughly enjoyed it, the jumps and drops are usually rideable without leaving the floor or have and alternate line for less experienced, so yeah, you should be fine, just take it steady until you have a bit more confidence

Actually, theres a way to do the best bits of the Black in half the time...

Follow the red route up to the top of the Spooky wood climb, then follow the fireroad up to the black just after the radio mast. Thats the high point of the black, so you go straight into the good DHs.
