What are the holes for in my new shimanoR060 shoes

I thought I'd get some spd shoes and pedals as I'm sick of seeing everybody else fly past me on the hills.
They arrived today from CRC http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=9115
I have not got a clue as to why they have a hole underneath near the front. Can anyone let mw know what it is for?
