I will soon require new shifters, mech etc.

Give me the jist of rapid rise in digestable chunks with lashings of resoning as to why I should invest in them.

Cheers.

As above. And the name sounds flashy.

It works incredibly well with DC levers.

Having used both normal & RR rear mech's, I would just stick with normal.

Basically, the mech is sprung the 'other way round' so think of what you do now to change gear & that does the opposite.

Stick with normal, and get SRAM. Then you donlt get the annoying chainstay clatter either.

The mech springs backward up to the largest cog, i.e. when you release cable in the shifter, the mech moves towards the bike making shifts into lower gears smoother and shifts into higher gears faster. I would highly recomend it.

If you're gonna change shifters and mech get some srams with 1:1 actuation ratio. Will work more precisely than shimano of the same price. You may feel that they're not as smooth as shimano but they're faster and don't require as much re-adjustement.

    WD-40? GT-85?? I'd rather use the old AK-47!

Apparently the new Shimano 'XT Shadow' rear mech won't do that either, becuase they've changed the spring

My sram x.9 has been just as smooth as the XT mech i had before. was very happy with both. although the sram won it on not needing to be adjusted as much [:)]

    1. It's sexy.

    2. Changing up gears when you hit the hills is improved and faster.

    3. It does take some getting used to.

    4. I use Sram Rocket/Attack shifters with Rapid Rise Rear Mechs.

I just meant that with sram, because of the rigidity of the mech and the less stretch of the cable that comes with the actuation ratio, you are capable of forcing the chain up to the biger sprockets. In situations in wich you are pressing the pedals real hard the chain will still change sprocket quickly with sram, making some noise. Using shimano rapid rise it will not make as much noise as it will not change gear as fast. Faster may seem, to those who are least interested in the ultimate performance, less smooth.

I would reccomend rapid rise ..
I just changed from LX normal to XT rapid rise and the difference is amazing.
Because it springs up the cogs it shifts easier and faster, and feels like its gonna last longer too.
My shifters also feel like they are "working" less harder.
But yeah takes some getting used to.

    WTF I just changed UP ? [:p]

Basically, the mech is sprung the other way. On a 'normal' (top normal) mech, the spring pulls it into top gear, and you use cable tension to pull it towards the bottom of the cassette.
On rapid rise (low normal) mechs, the spring tension pulls it into the bottom gear, and the cable towards the top.

The idea is that forced bad shifts are worse when they're into a cog, so when going down the cassette.
