Rear hub

Hey,

I was just out mountain biking, and when I came back I noticed that my rear wheel keeps slipping, and that when I stop turning the pedals but the bikes still rolling that my chain keeps becoming really loose because the cassette is still turning. I'm not really sure what the problem is, but is there anyway to check what's wrong and possibly fix it?

Thanks, Andy M

The one and only time this happended to me was when a broken, cut down spoke caught the inside of the cassette and kept forcing it to turn with the wheel, so make sure nothings jammed between the hub and cassette.

What do you mean by the wheel keels slipping?

Well, sometimes when I pedal the rear wheel doesn't move, but the chain isn't slipping because I checked. Also, when I turned the bike upside down and spun the pedals, when I stop the rear wheel keeps turning but it makes this loud clicking noise once every revolution and then the chain comes slack.

Sounds like somethings stuck then, the loud clicking noise is when the force trying to move the cassette gets too much and flicks past, only to get caught again and slacken the chain.

Not sure about moving the pedals and the rear wheel dosent move... when it does that dose the casstte move, just not the wheel? If so then it is your freehub gone.

Two things that don't add up. you say when you turn the cranks, the wheel doesnt turn. sounds like the hub failing to engage.

But then you say when you're freewheeling, the cassette is turning, which suggests that either something is stuck in the cassette/freehub as the ninja says, or that the freehub has jammed up.

Either way. take the wheel off the bike, and if you have the tools, get the cassette off. and try and turn it clockwise. if it spins freely without the wheel turning, the freehub is dead. if not. check for debris and stuff in there.
If you don't have the tools. get the wheel down to your lbs.

freehub has gone, basically the little teeth that act like a rachet get mashed, then bits of them get stuck causing it to stick, or spin freely. need a new freehub mate, happens quite a lot working at halfords. with not ryte crackin freehubs
