Help please, new bike required...

Probably the most common question, but a little help please...
My cinder cone is about to become an antique, it's time to purchase a new shiny bike, but which one?
I'm looking to spend upto œ500, I've been advised that a Carrera Fury would be a good starting point...but would appreciate several alternative opinions (as I won't be going through this process again for a while)...
Any thoughts?[:D]

A few to consider...
œ500 GT Avalanche Disc 1.0 (The Avalanche 1.0 Disc received 10/10 in MBR for 2006. Suntour X-100 forks, Truvativ 5D cranks, Deore Shifters, LX rear mech and Tektro Auriga Comp hydraulic disc brakes.)
œ500 Claude Butler Cape Wrath Disc (The Cape Wrath has recieved the "GOLD" award from What Mountain Bike magazine. Innovative and offering far better than average componentry.)
œ500 Carrera Fury (probably the best value bike for œ500, Fully Double Butted Frame, RS Tora 318 U-Turn forks, Sram X7 gears, Tektro Auriga twin piston hydraulic disc brakes)

Cheers for the comments...
What's the deal with test riding bikes?
Anyone know a decent retailer in West Yorks?
[:D]0 -
Sorry cant help you there. there isnt really a deal with test riding. any good shop will let you test ride as long as your not wasting there time.

Test rides will vary from shop to shop, some will only let you pootle round a car park, some will let you have the bike for longer, a test ride is the only real way to know if a bike is right for you.
Whereabouts in W. Yorks are you? it will help narrow down your shop search.

I'm in the Leeds area; I've seen the Stiff shop advertised in Headingley...
Also, what's the difference in frame design?
Whilst I've been looking into this, I've noticed that some of the frames seem to vary in design (Giant in particular)...
Cheers again for the help...[:D]0 -
Stif are very good I bought both my Orange bikes from them (if you could stretch your budget a little I'd recommend an Orange!)
Frame design depends on what the bike is designed for & how the manufacturer interprets the best way to do it.
Giant's are good bikes & usually quite lightweight.

Flurry: I asked for a sticky on this a while ago since the answer to this question is always the bloody same, but for some reason the idea was pooh-poohed by quite a few people.0

The fork on the Caldera is seriously crappy, I'd expect to see it on a œ300 bike

Maybe not the Caldera ten.
I was just looking through the bargain bikes on Evans and saw the saving on it, and as it fitted the bill...

On a different note; is it worth keeping my Cinder cone, I thought it may be of interest to a collector (optimism indeed)?0

I severly doubt it's old enough to warrant a collector being interested in it.

My dad bought a Carrera Fury recently, and whilst I wasn't the optimist about him buying it from Halfords, he preferred it in ride and appearance to similarly priced Specializeds in local bike shops, so went for it. Having had a few plays on it myself, I too really like it. For the price, everything is well specced. And after sorting a few issues myself that Halfords were too incompetant to do properly, its a sound ride.
I've even said I wouldn't mind one myself to pootle around on! Its a genuinelly nice ride.

Cheers, that sounds like a pretty good recommendation. The Mrs. has a Carrera Kracken and that seems a good entry level bike.
What were the issues that needed sorting?0 -
Just make sure it's all bolted together properly, if in doubt pop it into your trusted LBS for a once over.
