Great commuting mountain bikes

I'm thinking about joining the cycle to work scheme at work, and we are offered up to œ1000 for a bike and goodies from wheelies.co.uk
It's been a few years since I cycled, and never before have I cycled in London, but I was curious as to what people would recommend? I'd be looking to use around œ500 of the budget, as I would inevitably have to pay it back
As well as cycling to work (10 miles either way) I'd also want something that can withstand the rigour of light off-roading too.
Thanks for any help
The ones I've been looking at are:

Hi
I'm no expert but if I had to commute and only did light off road I would definately go for a 29er. Much faster on roads, paths and firm smooth tracks etc.0 -
Sorry to sound dumb but whats a 29er?"Come on you Greens"0

A bicycle with 29" wheels, in comparison to 26" wheels on 'normal' bikes.

26" Back Wheel
29" Front Wheel
I think this is correct

Uh, no.
If it's only/primarily for commuting, why carry round the extra weight of a Hardrock when something like a Trek 4100 or a Giant XTC will do the job for half the weight? Or even a Hardrock XC, though they are a bit cheap.
