so, who did it? i did, and apart form the 17 miles at the beginning it was fun. there was even a punch-up to witness!! although, i think i used the wrong bike, it was a bit punishing at the end, but i rode up ditchling beacon. i think thats what it's called anyway!

I did it. I started at 7am this year instead of 7.30 (although they didnt let us out until 7.25!) and sadly there was still too many selfish people walking on the first 2 hills so we ended up walking. We did it in 3hrs 50 mins which was a couple more than last year which was ok I guess as I had hamstring issues near the end and my friend was on his 3 speed Trek folding bike which he somehow rode up Ditchling Beacon!

I was carrying a gps data logging box that I am testing for work and I will extract the route later so you can load it into Google Earth which is quite cunning

Yep! My two mates and I started at 9am and it was a 'mare getting out of London - very frustrating with all the people pushing at the first sight of anything vaguely resembling a hill which meant that the whole road was jammed and we had no option but to get off and follow suit. One of my mates shearing off the valve on his inner tube and the consequent roadside repair also slowed us down. Our overall time was just over 7 hours but given it was our first time and given the sheer number of people on the road I'm pleased with that. I'm definitely up for it next year though and will trying to get a start before 7am.

Well done Breezer with your time!

So who did what speed coming down Ditchling?! I was keeping pace with a chap who had a bike computer which showed 45mph.

yer, thats the time i started, 9. it was a wee bit busy at the beginning, for the first two hours in fact! we ended up walking up the forst hill because everyone got off and walked. t'was irritating, as was brighton, which was also busy. it was fine when we were actually going, just the bits before and after.

Only 44.1 due to the head wind. I hit 51.3 there last year which is my quickest ever!

If you have Google Earth installed (new a version as possible) then download either of the zip files in the link below. The KML file in them loads straight into Google Earth (should be able to just double click) and it will show the route map picked up from my GPS when riding. You can expand the headings under Places on the left and untick Points which will leave it just showing the yellow speed line which from above shows the route nicely.

Zip file names are self explantry, one has the points as time in GMT so add 1 hour for current time, other has points in speed

Will take a look. I was just testing this box for work, its to go in cars but I rigged it up with some rc car batteries that I use for my home made light :)

Is there something like bikely that works for 3d windows live maps?
There's much more detail on live maps round here than there is on google maps, and I'm looking for something to let me plan routes over the mountains in 3d.

  • I also did it but used a road bike which probably made it a little easier. Was in the 6am start group but didn't leave until the end of that batch, meaning a start around 6:25am so it was still busy going through London but I didn't have the same issues as you guys on the hills.

Got down in 2hr53mins but it was raining from Ditchling into Brighton so the descent was slower than I would have hoped as the road was a little slippery. All good fun though, but would hate to do it in the main pack of people.
