i need a new pc , but dont know a lot about em.
There seems to be quite a few geekazoids on this forum so thought i would ask.
i need it just for general home use, never play games really. I have come accross this system.
AMD athlon AM2 4600 dual core
1GB DDR RAM
250GB HD
16x DVD ROM
18x DVD RW
7.1 surround sound
6 USB2 ports
3 firewire ports
in built card reader
this would set me back œ280 with a years warranty.
any thoughts would be appreciated

That system looks pretty good for the money
Although you will need a better set up if you're into games much?
You could get a better system if you made it yourself, although seeing as you dont know much about 'puters it probably isnt the best thing to doMBUK0 -
Definetly deal. That's a very good buy for the money.

Although, it seems a little to cheap. All the parts are going to be really bad quality.

you understand that some of the cheapness comes from the fact that this is for the base unit only .... no monitor no keyboard no windows.

Yes, but for a base unit with that spec its still cheap. They just skimp on things like Power supply, RAM and hard drive. I'm sure it'll be fine, just the RAM wont be very fast and the Hard drive and Power supply will be a little more prone to failing.
They're listing it with open office, isn't that illegal seeing as open office is free ware?

Huh?
OOo is licensed under the GPL. The GPL doesn't mean you can't charge for it.

Yeah, I realise that now. Because of the whole ethos behind free ware I assumed that the hippy types that made it did not like people selling it full stop. But thinking about it, the PS3 and countless other things run Linux.

Nah, the free in the free software 'movement' refers more to liberty than to price. The freedoms generally are freedoms of redistribution, modification and usage. So, for OpenOffice, anyone is free to look at how it works, and tweak it if they like. They can also give it to all their friends if they like it, and use in on as many PCs as they like.
I'm not aware of any form of licensing where selling (as opposed to giving away free) is oulawed - for most it is the act of redistributing.
