Hi,
I've just moved to an area of the country with great riding potential so I'd like to get myself a decent beginners bike to enjoy whats on offer. I've narrowed my search down to these, all at the œ400 mark:
http://www.tredz.co.uk/details.aspx?id=7282
http://www.tredz.co.uk/details.aspx?cgid=&id=9847&cid=
http://www.tredz.co.uk/details.aspx?id=10922
http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70223
With little knowledge of mountain bikes and also a dialup connection it isn't easy for me to compare the specs of each so I hope someone can offer me a bit of advice on which is the best bike for the money.
I am also interested in the size and riding position. I am 6'2" with long legs and relatively short arms so I'd be very interested if anyone knows how these particular bikes come up. I know it would be best to try the bikes myself but I thought I'd ask first in the hope of finding some first hand experience.
Thanks.

Giant has better forks
The quads are quite good brakes, Claud Butler has them. Felt has Shimano Alivio brakes, they're not too bad.
I'd say the Giant has the best wheels. Not sure though.
If it were me, I'd probably go for the Giant.
Need to test out heights though. XC is not the same as jumping.

this is slightly over your budget but looks good value for it. i'm not an expert though so maybe other people have an opinion on it?

Buy a bike from your LBS instead. And reap the rewards in aftersales service.

If you buy from Evans you get a free check-up on gears, brakes etc after 6 weeks, not necessarily quite the same, but worth bearing in mind considering Evams is likely to be cheaper than an LBS simply because of the size and economies of scale...
