hello all,
my dad has recently stopped smoking and drinking and has decided he wants to do something more tasking than fishing. he needs a strong reliable bike for cross country, road use. He is willing to pay œ500 but will go higher.
cheers

Id definately agree with the Marin Hawkhill, I have one and its a truly superb bike, I have upgraded parts on mine but even @ stock its an excellent ride. Also looks a hell of alot better than the others mentioned.___________________________________________________________

Personally - nothing from halfords!
They are built to suit occasional dry-weather riding, if he's only off to the shops every once in a while then fair enough, but for an adult riding XC then you need to look at something built a bit better! Specialized, Giant, Trek, Marin (possibly), GT etc.
Just my opinion mind!Specialized Rockhopper '07

People like you should be banned.
The Carrera Fury is an excellent bike for the money and probably the best value for money at that price mark.
Ask for discount for taking the bike boxed - something you can get 10-15 quid off for doing if you are going to pay straight and take it immediately.
This way you get to build the bike yourself and can be sure that it is being done properly.

If his buget is œ500 Max then I'd say Scott Reflex 30 (œ479) or the slightly sportier Scott Scale 70 (œ499)
