I basically want to make a battery pack to use with my Garmin 305 so that it will last longer. i think its fairly easy to make, 4 x AAA batteries to give 6v, a few resistors and and usb plug. Some masking tape and a few tie wraps should do it.
problem is i dont know what pins of the usb plug to use, what voltages are needed and do i need a regulator of some sort?
any suggestions?

Buy something like this?
You just put 4 AAA batteries in it and use the standard usb cable.

what's the current drain of the Garmin 305?
I would imagin it's fairly small so you might be better using batteries with a low self discharge rate rather then the highest marked capacity cells

~185mA
not much is it? but in terms of batteries i was thinking 4 X 1.2v rechargable ones, the voltage reads about 4.9v when in use, so i recon 4.8v will manage?0 -
Buying that battery pack would be a better option than making one, It will already have the components inside to make it a safe voltage for USB devices, Its designed for smartphones and mobiles so should be pretty safe for your GPS, And you can stil obviously buy rechargavble AAA batteries to go in it.
