Hi all
Firstly sorry to bore you all with another "what shall i buy thread" but i would love some advise before i commit.
I am about to change jobs, and when i start my new job i will be commuting on a MTB, 20 miles a day, and would like your advice on what to buy please.
My budget is œ300 (i know its not a lot). For my money i want a hardtail with disc brakes!
At the moment i am very close to walking into Halfords and buying a Carrera Vulcan, although with the 10% off on at the moment i am very tempted with the Carrera Kraken (slightly over budget at œ324 with 10% off).
I have been looking around and i am struggling to find anything better spec wise than the Carreras', i have heard alot on the forums good about the Carreras' and some bad as well. I am also looking on ebay but i want something new or very close. The bike will be used mainly for riding on the streets and for a few short cuts on tracks.
So what do you think? Any advise or links will be greatly appreciated.

thats kind of a good point, but the other side is...
if you want to go on tracks and through forests etc, you also dont want a road bike with ultra slim tyres and them weird road handlebars.
i dont really know what bikes to suggest, as its not my area, but for mostly road commuting, you obviously want a hardtail, probably large frame 17" + frame, with mountain bike wheels and tyres, but nothing massive.
sorry if thats not much help, but i tried :P

what about something like this
there are heaps of cheap hybrid bikes on evans website, which i think is what you will want for best.
I also think that you dont need disc brakes , for 300 you are going to get cheap mechanical discs which are going to be no better than a decent set of rim brakes.
I would also go for rigid forks as it will make the bike lighter, and the same again .... for that budget , suspension forks will be heavy and cheaply made.

I know what your saying and thanks for the input but i really want a MBT with a pair of slicks."Come on you Greens"0

Do some research into Edinburgh Bike Coopretive. They have a large range of bikes for not much money.
You may find what you are looking for.

Love the looks and style great looking bike. But the seat looks a bit close to the handle bars (or is it just me) so don't know how good it will be on the commute.
