I'm off to Afan soon and want to enjoy the trails as much as i can.

I have a very fast metabolism and run out of energy after 20 miles of pushing fairly hard, i get completely drained, start to shake and everything.

If i purchased something like this how long could i expect this to keep me going for?

I know it depends on me and everything, but any rough idea? Worth spending a bit more?

I dont think that has anything to do with energy but hydration. electroylytes help with absorbing the water if you need tooo much water it just flushes them.

Just take a lot of food and drink with you. Its the only thing i can think of apart from training loads, as im not a health and fitness expert.

  • Just take some cereal bars with you, or something you can munch while riding to keep you going until you stop for something more substantial.

yeah, i plan to take chocolate, but i have an extremely fast metabolism, i lose my energy very quickly and suddenly, i can't say, oh, i'm running out, id better eat something, so i really need a quick fix too, which is what i was thinking with the tablets, just wondered if they would work for a quick energy boost? I could eat on the way round to keep up the slow release energy too.

Good thing with afan there a few parts where everybody stops for a breather.

I tend to pace myself on the uphills and have a break once at the top. You could fill a camelbak with an energy drink, take some chocs, bananas are good, have a good breakfast and should be alright.

have a can of red bull before you ride and because you are using the caffiene energy when it wears off you bearly notice it. Also another way is to go to tescos, and buy there version of red bull (kick œ1.48 for six cans) and wait for a suitable amount to go flat and then stick it in your camelback. And don't buy foods with sugar because you when at night your eyes just want to close, but you feel awake, that is because of too much sugar versus the amount of energy being used

Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about. Caffeine increases alearness. It does not give you energy. It is full of simple sugar which is not the kind of substrate you want. You will burn it up withing a mile of sprinting.

Complex carbs for dinner. The cafe at Glyncorrwg do a perfect Spanish Tortilla which is full of starch which is perfect for long rides.A banana on the trail will fill you up and give you instant energy if you are feeling drained.

That quick fix on the track that you need could come from some lucazade tabs they are pretty good but what you really need is lots of starch before hand like pasta and bread and lots of sugar while your there. I have the same problem of a fast metabolic rate so i just eat all the time to compromise =D

    For relentless see red bull.

You'll need to put down plenty of carbs, try energy tablets, drinks gels, and try and find something that works for you. Personally i find a complex carb meal between 4 and 5 hours before training works best coupled with plenty of lucozade hydroactive during training to keep hydrated. Look for pasta and simple chicken before riding and something more simple (read as above for gel, drink, tabs etc.) for during riding.

But you should be able to push for more than 20 mins if you are reasonably fit, particularly on a bike. Maybe talk to your gp if that is easy, could be indicative of something else.

Stay at the queens guesthouse in glyncorrwyg and have a bloody big fry up before you go..we ate it with trepidation thinking we where gonna barf it on the first climb up to whites level but hell it fortified us for the day.. camelback full of energy drink and a few cereal bars should do you till early afternoon then pop into one of the two mountain bike centers for a fill up with what was cheap and lovel;y food....methinks they should have a water tap up on top of the wall somewhere as we ran out on the way down...just an idea

With regard to them electrolyte tabs - I'd see how it goes. I only get cramps if I don't eat/drink well (never again!), whereas a friend of mine gets them regardless and is prescribed quinine tablets by his Dr.
Personally, I'd rather carry a banana, oats bars, water, and some Lucozade tabs.

However, if I were to go with them electrolyte ones, I'd go with regular water in my hydration pack and pop one of them tabs in the bottle on my frame. That way I'd avoid having to drink 2-3ltrs of however they taste, and just put up with sips from the smaller bottle.

Actually, I'd like to see a *proper* test done on food/hydration done in the mag. Two riders, two days, two manageable loops.
Day 1: Do everything properly. Eat/drink well. etc.
Day 2: Beer night before, fry-up in morning, only chocolate/sugary snacks and water (but, slightly under-fed/hydrated, if possible).
GPS with HRM's to see impact on riders.
No.... don't ask me to be a rider!!
Stumpy, Rockhopper (stolen!) & custom SX Trail II - that should do it!
