hope xc hub clicking?

I recall last week hearing a guy click down the road very loudly every time he freewheeled. I have just bought new wheels and specifically asked the guys at CRC whether this was an issue with the Hope XC hubs. They assured me it is not.

However I have just received these wheels and when I hold the mount for the rear cassette and spin the wheel I hear a clicking. Is this just because there is no frame and tyre attached to damp the noise or is this a cause for concern?

Thanks

As a rule Hope hubs click very, very loud. They are supposed to.
If you want to quieten the noise, pack more grease into the freewheel IIRC.

  • I am thinking of calling off the build of my wheels:
    Hope XC Hub
Mavic XC 717 disc 2007 rim
    1.8-2mm spokes

For a pair of Mavic Crosstrail 2007 disc wheels. The main reason being the freehub sound. Can anyone else shed some light on how these compare volume wise?

    Thanks

  • Right, first off, it appears to me you seem to think this clicking is a bad thing? It really is not. And if thats not that case, sorry for misjudging you.

You get a click when a pawl falls into an engagement on the hub body (in modern hubs anyway). If your hub is clicking clearly and consistenly (obviously dependant on the riding) then you can have confidence when you go to pedal it will engage properly, and won't slip etc.

If you want to quieten the sound, put some grease into the hub body where the pawls and engagements are (will require disassembly).

Edit: The sound, without a tyre and tube on, and off the bike, will sound very metallic and most probably significantly louder than it will sound on the bike.

Hope pro 2 is stupidly loud!!! If you don't want the click - pedal, thus, making you go FASTER!!!

I realise the click is not a malfunction, I just don't really want all my rides out in the peace of the forest accompanied by a loud clicking sound.

If packing more grease into the hub will significantly quieten the click then I'll give them a go. Could I expect it to be significantly quieter?

Now this one I do know. The pro2s are a lot louder than XC. I heard someone with a pro2 hub from across the street with masses of road noise, so loud that I turned to see what the noise was.

Two good hubs that make little noise are the M970 XTR and DT Swiss 240s hubs but neither are cheap.

DT swiss is about 23494575958474 times better.
I got the 240s as a direct replacement (albeit on a differnt wheel) for a hope XC hub and its incredible. Light, fast engagement and totally sealed. Only downside is price.

If you really are set on a silent hub its a quality choice.
The XTR is a bargain if you ask me. I've got the XTR on my Anthem and it's been absolutely brilliant. Only thing with the XTR is it only comes centrelock so you would have to buy an adaptor on top whereas you can get the 240s in a 6 bolt version if you want.

I run the XTR with centrelock adaptors to run Juicys and I highly recommend. Centrelock hubs with adaptors works out a bit lighter than the same hub in 6 bolt with bolts as well.

EDIT - Can't comment on sealing on XTR as yet as I haven't had them that long.

If you find the clicking too loud with a Hope XC, you may have an errant pawl spring causing the pawl to sit out of position, and become unnecessarily noisy.
Strip the hub & check it out before splashing out on a new one.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice

I've spoken to alot of people about this now and still can't see why anyone would want a really loud freewheel? The only reason i've seen offered is either, "so people move" or "so people look at me"
Persoanly i'd go out and buy a silent clutch right now if i had the money.

I doubt they are designed to be loud. but theres not an awful lot you can do to avoid the noise. if you put lighter springs on the pawls it will reduce noise. but increase the chance of missing an engagement. packing lots of thick grease in there will have the same effect, but again, could potentially increase the chance of missing engagements.

EDIT - have you noticed its *generally* the little kids that like the clicking?

Yes my Pro 2's are good for making ramblers move out of your way when you are like 30 metres from them! It does encourage you to pedal more and get fitter as the noise is so loud. If I am having an off day though and dont feel like pedalling they have given me bad headaches before :( I prefer the pratically silent XT one on one of my other bikes
