Hi there, I took my bike apart the other day (frame respray + convert to SS) and i ended up fiddling with the rear up. I could see no obvious way of getting the cassette off, and ended up unscrewing a bolt which allowed me to take out the middle of the hub (the QR casing if that makes sense?) and a load of ball bearings went everywhere...
If i just regrease it all, stick the bearings back in and screw the middle bit back together it should be fine, but im still stuck with removing the cassette, any tips? I havnt got a special tool, is it really necessary?

What type of hub is it?
Best guess is you need a lockring tool such as this one:

You will also need a chainwhip to hold the cassette in place so you can unscrew the lockring.
All this could get expensive for a task you will do a minimal number of times, so you may be best of asking your LBS how much they would charge to do the job for you.
<font size="1">If you don't want to buy the tools, and don't want to pay the LBS, you could use a screwdriver, hammer, and old bit of chain, but thats as far as I'm going with that method as I DO NOT recommend it.</font id="size1">

You took the axle out your wheel
When you put it back together with all the bearings in the right place, you need to set the bearing tightness using the cones (nuts with a concave chamfer on the end) so that the wheel doesn't wobble but there is no binding. If you can't manage, read park tools or go to the LBS.

read the info on parktools to identify if you have a cassette and free body or a casseete block.

ok, i managed to put it all back together, though im one bearing down (only one one side, should be ok..) and im just awaiting my lockring tool off ebay, as well as my new gusset single speed kit and im good to go, hopefully.

wrong number of bearings will mean a hub that will be dead in days.
dont forget you will need a chain whip as well as the lockring tool.
