Next time it happens, write down the error code and then google it.

Hehe, at college my C++ lecturer used to call it the 'Blue screen of happiness', for some odd reason...

We used to have an electronics lecturer that had memories what the beeps mean when a PC is starting up for seemingly every single BIOS made between 1985 and 2001!
Geeky, but actually really handy, if one of the college machines went down, he could could tell straight off if it was faulty RAM, knackered CPU, not enough power etc etc!

Anyhoo, in answer to fizik, the following links should help you identify what's causing the BSOD. I have a link somewhere to an almost complete and comprehensive list, but I can't find it!

    BSOD help site
    another BSOD help site

  • First port of call should be a clean reinstall of the OS, but make sure you have all the drivers (latest is best) handy. If that doesn't cure it then there's likely to be something wrong with the hardware. I've dealt with a number of BSODs when I was working as a part time IT techy so if you post the error message I'll see if I can point you in the right direction.

First of all though, you should re-install the OS. It's amazing what a corrupted driver or dll can do.

STFU. whats the point in all that hassle if its a hardware fault? its not going to acheive anything!

FIRST - google the error code. find out if its a hardware peoblem. or more specifically, what the problem is.

Does your motherboard have a post lcd screen? if so, check the motherboard manual for what thats saying.

have you installed any new software/drivers recently? downloaded anything dodgy looking? if so, remove downloaded files and system restore to a point before installing whatever it was.

if you've not installed any new drivers. it might be worth giving it a try.

Also, check that everything is properly plugged into the pc. seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened [;)]

if all of that has no results. then try reinstalling.

    No need to be rude.

Sometimes, a corrupted driver, or a virus, or a bad driver, or any number of things, can cause a BSOD which gives an error message that points in the direction of a hardware error. It's not the hardware that's at fault though, just the dodgy driver which is trying to get the hardware to do something it can't.

Besides, re-installing the OS takes no more than an hour and a half, along with getting all your drivers and favourite apps installed. Not a lot of trouble to go to really to avoid replacing hardware that doesn't need replacing.

I diddn't mean to be rude. but there really is no point in reinstalling if its not needed. Plus, it would take a lot more than an hour and a half if you have a lot of stuff to backup. Then sticking it back in the right places takes time.

So why not just reinstall the drivers (and possibly apps) then? Has a similar effect, but you don't need to faff around finding something to backup onto, a WinXP CD, a 24-digit number etc.

The more sensible option would be to note down the error code and work out what it is. Or, at the very least, see if there's some pattern to it to help you work out what it is.

Hmm. I don't know what to think of that. Surerly if you were a true geek, then your computer wouldn't BSOD in the first place? You'd know how to make it work?

Ive never had the BSOD, I just read that in a magazine. Also I was meaning that's a geeky thing, not that I was one.
