Right, today in my phycics lesson our teacher said he would give the person who could solve the following question 20 quid! here it is
3 men do a job in different times
Chris - 2 days
Tom - 4 days
James - 6 days
How long would it take if they all did the job together?
its Between 1 and 3 and isnt 2, and it is a number with 2 decimal places. For example it could be 1.45
Any ideas? thanks[:D]

That question seems to make no sense. I can't remember any like that in physics, even way back pre GCSE.

I don't think its actually to do with Physics, i think its just one of those stupid things that teachers do to get students excited. Never worked with me, they usually got the finger or something along those lines.

Probably the average divided by the number of workers then. So 4/3. Or 1.33.

Oh, that's 1.0909090909 by the way...
The method:
This job can be done in 2, 4, and 6 hours. First work out an imaginary total of 'effort' this takes. To work out how much each man can do in an hour, it has to be a number divisible by 2, 4 and 6.
So, 12. The job takes 12 'effort'. The guy who does it in 6 hours does 2 effort per hour. The one in 4 does 3effort/hr and the one in 2 does 6effort/hr.
Get me so far?
So, all three together will do 6 + 3 + 2 = 11 effort/hr.
As the job is 12 'effort', all three will do 11 in an hour, so that leaves just 1 effort left over.
1/11 (the time it takes to do one effort for 3 people) is 0.0909090909 recurring. So, 1.0909090909 hours in total.
It is damn good physics if you ignore the story and concentrate on the method.

It would take just over 2 hours. Its only a one man job, so chris would do it and the others would just get in the way and slow him down a bit.
Lateral thinking baby.
Say that and I guarante you'll get some dosh (yes I want some)

I'm sticking with 1 man job. Teachers ain't going to give you money for somthing that streight forwards.

Its a lateral thinking question (IMO)
If the "job" is a one man job, then its not gong to get done any faster with 2 or 3 people. The answer would be 2 hours, as Chris, the fastest would be the one doing the work, and the others would either do nothing or (chuck in a bit of the old "too many chefs.." and get in the way, you get just over.
If i were a physic's teacher giving away money on a physics question, i'd do that.

I'm not sure... Looking into the mind of the physics teacher...
He didn't specify the job, so it could be a task that can easily be split between people (like, licking envelopes).
It looks like he's given them the 'is 1 < #.## < 3' hint to steer them away from that idea.
