i have a 26 mile chairty ride coming up soon which i will be cycling with a GT Avalanche 1.0 Disc bike, i find the tyres currently have a lot of friction on roads and such and so was looking for a fast set of tyres for my bike! prferrably road / semi tyres
i currently have some 26 x 1.95 tyres, does that mean they have to be that exact same size? i prfer to buy from evans cycles, chain reaction (most prefered) and wiggle!
any help will be greatly aprreciated

I am also doing a charity ride soon (29 miles) and im just nicking the specialized resolutions off my dads bike to fit onto my full suss norco. theyre like fully road tyres and they were pretty cheap when he bought them!

so simply put, i could get any 26 x tyre and it would fit?0
-
within limits yes, most road tyres are around that width, look for the same size, if you cant get it, go for 2.0 or 2.1. or somewhere around there. but yes 26x something will fit. but off road tyres you can get big widths, then you want to be checking the sizes, but roads should be fine!

Sometimes it overheats. You have to make sure it's in a ventilated place all the time.

My brother put a set of cheapy road tyres from Halfords on his, they're amazingly smooth and grippy in the dry. I've not tried them in the wet, but they look like they'll be ok.

There's a couple of 26" sizes that aren't copatible. If the second number's a fraction (26 x 1 1/8) then it wont fit. If it's decimal (26 x 2.1) then it will, depending on your rim.
You don't want to go too narrow on a rim, more prone to blowouts that way. In general, XC rims will go down to about 1".
There's a huge plethora of slick tyres available. Schwalbe, Specialized and Continental are good brands to look at.
If you're staying on tarmac, I'd look at Specialized All Condition Armadillo (œ20, 1") or the Continental Sport Contact (œ19, 1.2"), personally.

I'd suggest the Maxxis Flyweight 330's. Just dont be surprised with the odd puncture. Great tire though.

I use bontrager satalites (not sure I spelt that right). 1.5inch dual compound and puncture resistant

i used specialized fatboys for my summer of commuting, they haven't worn out yet and it is a couple of thousand miles later, very pleased with them.

I also have specialized fatboys on the wheels i use for training on road.
They are 1.25 and completely smooth but they do grip well. I've also put a couple of thousand miles on them and have not had 1 puncture and they look like they have loads of life left in them.

It is said that some couriers who run them run them down to the kevlar belt, i'veonly had two punctures on them, both from flint slivers, so pretty damn sharp, nothing apart from something like stans would have stoped them.

Do the charity ride on your existing tyres and give the money you would have paid for new ones to the charity. [^]

Not really. They are designed as a hardpack tire but wouldnt be viable on any sort of reasonable off road. I use a set for commuting and they are excellent for the road.

Not really, ever looked at tarmac, it isn't smooth. The smoother the tyre the better it grips the road, hydroplaning isn't an issue with bikes because of surface pressure or something. Trust me, they have enough grip, unless you hit something metal, like a man hole cover.

I use specialized crossroad tyres, I have tried city slicks in the past and they were fast, but I never had full confidence in the wet, they never let me down though! The crossroads have been impeccably behaved in the recent wet weather.0

Yeah, so they're good for hardpack. Almost by definition, anything with knobbles is less good for tarmac than something without.

Try them and then tell me they aren't absolutely fine.

They might well be absolutely fine. But they wont be as good as a pair of slicks.
But even tractor tyres are absolutely fine until you try something more suitable.
