I PASSED MY EXAMS! YAY!

Finished 6 years of secondary school and probably with having gotten quite a high condition for uni! Woo! I'm so happy

mine finnish tomorrow, getting results sometime in august so far i guess of failed science having not handedin any coursework

im not trying to look a rebel u old mans stamp collectionin tard. whats the point in doing that, im jsut telling the truth. i actually did 2 out of the three and one got handed back but i just didnt handit back in. so i only have one peice in.

I take it the whole education system is very different in the Nether regions then (lol)

Basically here in Holland they do the following:

You have 8 years of primary school, from age 4-12. At 8th form, you do a test. This test and your previous 8 years of school will determine on what kind of school you go to after the first 8.

We've three types of school.
VMBO - lower education, lasts 4 years (12-16) and is mainly practical. About 60% of Dutch people will attend this. After 4 years people will either get a job (say a supermarket cashier) or study on for something like a hairdresser etc.
HAVO - Middle type of education. Lasts 5 years (12-17) and will get you a 'better' job. People with Havo would become something like a teacher, dentist's assistant etc. Usually means you have to continue your education to become what you want. About 20% of Dutch people.
VWO - Highest type of education. Lasts 6 years (12-18) and is the way into uni. Very academic, lots of theory. With VWO you can basically get any type of uni education you wish, no conditional offers - you've proven yourself worthy by getting the diploma (hence it being a big deal). Quite hard so only 10% of Dutch people attend. Divided in Atheneum/Gymnasium - latter being the first with Latin/Greek. No actual level difference though. After that, nearly everyone will get into uni.

Also, you can quite easily fail a year and have to do it again. Which means it's also possible to fail your exams. However, usually they'll fail the year before. (So they stick in say 5 VWO rather than 6) So that's why it's also a big deal - you're never totally sure you pass your exams and might as well have to stay another year.

So that's the story of Dutch education. Yay! Hope it'll solve some of the confusion

Edit: Sorry mr. JinjaNinja! It's nothing odd or anything, I just haven't heard anyone be really happy and all the people I've spoken to didn't see it as a big event! So I assumed. Sorry if I assumed wrong, I do apologise!

I've heard you get free/very cheap uni as well. Any truth in that?

Definitely not free, we don't get student loans like you do. However, an academic year is 1000 pounds. BUT, we do have to pay it and right away as well. So if you can't pay then you can't have uni. So it's cheaper - but if you're poor you're still screwed.
