new bike for our lass

Our lass has this horrible bike , barracuda instinct , made of gaspipe with non series shimano mechs , yucky forks, plastic brake levers etc.
she wants a much lighter bike for commuting and occasional light trails.
I got gifted a trek 4300 that had been left in the rain . After i stripped off the ruined parts i am left with a frame , post, rear wheel + cassette , stem and bars.
I have costed doing it up to deore spec with rigid forks ( for lightness )and it comes to about œ230 with CRC
Should i bother with this route, i have tried to find a new bike for this budget, but keep finding acera specced things with heavy front sus.
what does everyone else think ? know of any good deals ?
this is gonna be worth a week of BJs for me so any help is appreciated. [:D]

Have a look on ebay, i picked up a nice 2006 Kona for my Lass for œ225. Still going well.
