AVG for virus, you should have spyware protection such as spybot

avg isn't free any more. or at least it wasn't last time i checked.

The avg virus and spyware utility's are good, but the firewall is utter sh*t

AVG sucks balls. Try something like Antivir, which is free for personal use.
I've had to fix loads of computers that were riddled with viruses, but AVG hadn't picked any of them up.

I've never had any problems with it, neither has anyone I know. Sure it was up-to-date?

I don't think any A/V software is ever all-encompassing. And, obviously, the last one you use is always the one that looks like it is.

The best protection against virii is to not get them in the first place. Yes, this does involve a little bit of thought, but thinking's a good habit to get into.
