Laptop CD/DVD drive

Hi folks.
I'm having problems with the combi drive on this laptop: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/ ... service=UK
Basically it will not read anything from CDs but it will read DVD movies, is there anything I can try to rectify the problem or will the drive need to be replaced? If the drive does need replacing would it need a technician or could anyone with a bit of common sense do it?
Thanks in advance

I had thought about an external one but then I loose the portability (when I need to read from discs anyway)0

yer it is a bit inconvenient, Can you remove the old one and replace with a new internal one?MBUK0

Uh, dunno dude. The only time I have ever seen inside a laptop was when I changed RAM modules & then all I needed to do was remove cover, extract old & insert new. If it is fairly straightforward I'm more than willing to give it a go but if there's a chance I'll jam the whole thing up & end up with a œ450 lump of plastic I would rather pay someone to do it0 -
Don't do it if you're not confident about it. Not worth itMBUK0

Some are modular, Look underneith for a small sliding switch with a pic of a padlock on it? If not it will need taking to a shop and stripped down to replace, Looking on Ebay they only have the modular type.

My dell lappy came with a manual for removing and upgrading all the parts, including DVD drive. So I presume it could be done on most laptops.

Nothing at all is mentioned about changing it in the manual0

You're laptop is probably designed to have non replaceable parts. They want you to buy a new computer every time a part breaksMBUK0
