hey, it's a long way off but next year me and my mate are riding form bath to criccieth in north wales for charity.
at the moment we are talking about our bikes. we have decided to get new ones as we are riding terrible rigs!
neither of us have alot to spend but if i needed i could get much more.
we are, at the moment looking at the 07 Specialized rockhopper disc.
but i was previously looking at the xc fsr.
my only hang ups are the price and the fact it's full sus.
any advice?

A hardtail may be more reliable but then full suss will be more comfortable.

Spesh is a great make to buy from though as the bikes are so reliable. Also look at Giant XTC's and the Saracens on offer at www.winstanleysbikes.com (although they are more aggro XC).

Sometimes it overheats. You have to make sure it's in a ventilated place all the time.

Why don't you donate the money you'd spend to the charity instead?

C'mon guys, If there doing that many miles its got t obe Hardtail IMO. Much less weight to lug about, direct drive, so not pedal bob (no matter how much better pedal bobs gotten, its still and issue over that distance). Less chance of something braking.. Cheaper!
I'm also guessing your going to be on cycle paths mostly rather then off roading it. Bath to Bristol cycle path ain't "wild" enough to warrent F/S.
If your worried about comfort on such a long ride get a suspention seat post.

How exactly are you getting from A to B... i.e. what type of road surface will you be be expecting to be on mainly? No point in riding on a fire road that is as flat as with a full sus that has 5" of travel

one of my bikes Scott scale 20
Another one 2004 klein attitude xv
    and finally 2006 Giant anthem2

I still don't like full suzzer bikes, so i'd say hard tail, servicing costs much less / less to go wrong, long distance its lighter and climbs better, though its not as fast down hill due to control issues.

Going hardtail is cheaper and if you are doing roads and the tracks are not that bad then it would be no point of having a full sus. Also it is alot cheaper
  • I'd say go for the hardtail. Full bouncers are great and have their place in the grand scheme of things, but it really doesn't sound like you need one.

Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken.

Definately go with the hardtails. Much easier on the legs over smooth surfaces.
