Can I bounce?

Hi,

As I get out and about more I develop my own ways of getting round/over/through obstacles.

Was just wondering - I quite often use my forks to bounce over holes/roots etc as I sprint along tracks. Is this a legitimate technique or am I likely to damage forks doing this?

You should 'preload' your forks and use this rebound to help you get more height out of a hop over something if not easier to just unweight the front of the bike - 'bounce' sounds an odd word though

lol am I the only one who uses heavy damping then? I can't 'bounce' my forks...

It sounds like hes run out of oil in his forks and he's pogo-ing everywhere

i do the same thing, use little rocks and roots as kickers to get me over everything. but my forks are fine, and mega soft, but i still get a mega kick off these roots and rocks once you have the technique right.

thanks folks - yes perhaps rebound is a better word. XC pogoing :-] hee hee like it!

I thought forks were designed predominantly to prevent you shaking around, buckling your wheel and coming off with every root or pot hole - but it sounds like enough people know what I mean so I will carry on.

Yeah I use the "bounce" when I can't be bothered to jump over a little rut or pot hole. Back end takes it nicely and just makes it a bit more comfey. If its something big then you need to get the back of the bike up too!

are we talking about kind of manualing over obstacles? (just lifting the front up to take the jolt out of the impact?)

yes - but while I find just lifting near impossible I push down on the fork just before the obstacle then lift using 'bounce' or 'rebound' to get over / up

it seems to work well but suspension on other vehicles is never used this way so didnt want to break good kit through misuse!

i was talking about getting the front wheel up, then flicking the back wheel up too, getting air. there are a few nice little step ups on my local loop, about one, two foot up from a little rock that is acting as a kicker.
i'll see if i can get a vid up on youtube. just found a poor quality video of me doing one on my mobile, you can sort of see what i mean.

Lots of leg work then. I know my jump tech ain't the best, but crouch over the middle of your top tube (centre yourself) turn your feet on the pedals so your toes are pointing at the ground. Then push back onto the pedals REALLY hard (otherwise you can get nasty slips) and pull up with your calfs/hamstrings. At the same time pull the front up and push forwards on the bars. I started this after reading a few BMX articles and crossing it with MTB stuff i had already practiced, to no avail.

Anyone else use this tech, as i don't think its the best one to use[?]
