Opinions on the Nintendo Wii?

I'm seriously thinking of buying a Nintendo Wii, but I need to know a few things first...

This Virtual Console thing... How well do the controls translate from the old games onto the new controllers?

This Update Channel thing... How often do you get free stuff on it? Is it mostly "here's a new thing that you can buy"?

The Internet Channel... How usable is it? could I get on MBUK with it for example?

How intrusive is this Wii remote sensor bar thing?

and finally, how 'real time' does the input from the controller feel? I have this vision in my head of it being really laggy and feeling detached....

I dont know about all your questions but: Internet is good, its pretty easy to surf the web and you can get on all the websites. The sensor bar isnt very intrusive at all, you will soon forget its there, Ive never noticed any lag when I have been playing

They have a novelty factor, they are good when you first get them, but after a while they get annoying.

Sometimes when you just want to sit down and play and relax you cant, because its quite physical.

There fun though. I dont have one, but my mates tried connecting to the UPdate thing on it because he has wireless, but it kept on stalling 1/2way.

  • Well i have had one since they came out so here are your answers.

This Virtual Console thing... How well do the controls translate from the old games onto the new controllers? You actually need a œ10 old style controller to play them and that is fine to play with

This Update Channel thing... How often do you get free stuff on it? Is it mostly "here's a new thing that you can buy"? Its updates about once a month with things like a free new channel and more settings. Also there is not really any "buy" advertising so its all good.

The Internet Channel... How usable is it? could I get on MBUK with it for example? This is really easy to use except for lots of typing as using the wii remote on a virtual keyboard become boring after a paragraph. But it has loads of built in programes so you can watch online videos like youtube etc. Also you can listen to music and is good to use from your sofa.

How intrusive is this Wii remote sensor bar thing? You can either stick it on the top or bottom of your t.v(just make sure to tell your wii which in the first setup) i have mine on the top of my t.c and its grey and black and isnt really very intrusive at all. Infact you may not notice it sometimes.

and finally, how 'real time' does the input from the controller feel? I have this vision in my head of it being really laggy and feeling detached....It doesnt feel laggy at all! it has a very smooth and realistic feel(except for in golf for some reason) also if you are playing a game like tennis the sound of the ball hitting your racket comes out the wii controller making you feel very involved.

There you go. Except make sure you get a few games for it since mine was a bit boring when i only had 2/3 games but i would recommend something like wii play to start you off aswell as the free wii sports you get. But even though it is a great experience it is best with friends and i still prefer my xbox 360 so it is your decision.

I've played on a mates a bit, I got bored of it fairly quickly. Once the novelty had worn off. Said mate doesn't seem to agree though.

  • I've got one, its great fun and really good at parties. Everyone wants a go on it. Like 'Junior Joker' says, its not laggy at all most of the time. It is on a few games though, like golf for example. Tennis, Baseball, Boxing and Bowling all have incredible control and you do feel very in control.

If you buy one, don't let girls near it.

You'll never get near your TV again, and they'll get so excited that anything remotely breakable nearby will be destroyed.

I sold mine today. Never touched it after the first week. There's fuck all games for it and there are none coming out that are remotely (no pun intended) interesting to me. The Wii game market is saturated with gimmicky nonsense that gets very, very, very repetitive. Cooking games? Get stuffed.

I play my 360 to death now what with Guitar Hero 2, Gears of War and as of today Forza 2.

Summary: The wii is fun for a very short while but loses it's appeal very quickly. Only buy one if you've got loads of friends and you're sure you'll want to jump around the living room like a spastic every time you want to 'relax' and play a few games.

    Thanks folks. Very informative Joker.
It turns out that a woman at work has one and she lives a couple of minutes away from work, so i'll be popping round there for a quick go on the Wii one dinner.

    Cheers again folks!

yer my brothers has one aswell as a 360, he got it for crimbo(my dad qued up until 12 at the front of the que to get one) and i dont think its been used since mid january, and that was me playing tennis, they are good fun, but with no actual quality games and the 360 having guitar hero II which is just insanely good, the wii doesn't get a look in, i'd have 1 though if i got offerd, they are a good laff if youve got mates round

I had one and sold it a week later. The controller is ok but its really not responsive enough and doesn't do a good enough job of translating your movements to the game. Playing wii tennis for example, jamed if you can get the ball anywhere near where you want it to go, maybe 5 times out of 10 it will go to the correct side of the court you aimed for. Boxing is not responsive enough and you end up swinging a lot and your character doing nothing. I found that as a whole the technology in the remote, although fun at first, for a serious gamer like myself just didn't replicate my body movements well enough. Also a lot of the games are just SNES, Gamecube games made to run on the Wii. Im sticking with my 360 - loads more fun!

I liked the Wii when I tried it out for a couple of days. Not enough to want to spend that much money on it though.

If you have the spare money, get one. They are good for parties/hanging out with mates. Otherwise, get a real console

    The Wii is awesome.

I know your Australian but we've been nice enough to let you use our language. You can at least use it properly. Full stops, capital letters and the ability to spell things like 'Playstation' go a long way.

    Noob.

  • Jesus those spider man graphics are sh<s></s>it. I think that the Wii is the most fun, and I don't really care that its not 1080p, or have 3.2 jigawatts. Its all about fun, and the Wii is very fun.

dog lover around games like pool and golf are ok for a bit but you soon get bored of them(like with ps2 eye toy) but once your bored its no where near as good as even a x box or ps2 for proper games waste of money, you how many go on e bay for proof they are just a fad
