How well would the above bike cope with heavy(ish) trail riding where there are steep decents and rocky terrain in places such as isle of skye? I am concerned the fork will be too stiff and not offer enough travel. I have approx œ700 to spend on a hardtail am a fairly novice rider, would I be better off with something like a new Specialized Rockhopper disc with RockShox Tora 302 SL fork 100mm?
thanks

I would always go with a new bike, unless i knew the previous owner, and known that anything hadnt happened to the bike.
The Rockhopper seems pretty good, and it has all modern parts.
My choice would be the Rockhopper
