Right, first heres the story, Ive ridden bmx and jump bikes all my life, my current bike has a tiny frame, rigid forks, no brakes, low seat etc. And I use it for riding skateparks and popping down to the shop. I work in a bike shop and the guys I work with have been trying to get me out riding with them, except I dont ride xc, I just dont, well after a while I gave in, I was on a borrowed bike, with spd's 27 gears, brakes and full suspension, and I loved it. It was pretty awesome to say the least, so Im looking to set myself up a bike. But xc/racing isn't my area of expertise, and Im slightly lost. Im looking at a custom build, and will be spending around œ1500 rrp (Ill be getting it through the shop) and was wondering what can I get? I would like to spend more, but Im a poor 18 year old student etc etc. Just looking for ideas, and what you'd do if you were in my situation, but if you want to type out a full build Im all ears!
Im 6'1", fairly tall, and want dics, 27speed etc, Im not sure on rear suspension and was thinking for that price, I may aswell get a higher quality hardtail, rather than a cheaper full sus.
Also I really like the spec stumpjumper, looks super clean, but I want function over form, so Im unsure.

I build my Stumpy for around that kinda cash. I got the frame on Ebay, brand new œ550. Forks, again, brand new, œ220. Merlin do great deals on groupsets that include wheels. You can get a full XT kit with DT 5.1 or 4.1 rims on XT hubs for œ450 now.
They are fantastic bikes as well.

Two suggestions I would give are Giant XTC 2.5 and Giant Anthem 1.
The XTC 2.5 is about 800 quid and an excellent value for money buy. The spec is not bad for the price and will last you a long time as a beginner to proper off roading. This way will also save you some money if you do decide its not for you or money to spend upgrading later on.
The Anthem is a nice bike and great spec but would advise test riding this and a few other bikes to see how it handles in comparison as you may find the geometery a bit 'racy'.

I want to get it all through the shop (leisure lakes) so I can take advantage of my discount, and if anything goes wrong its all allot easier, and I know the mechanics etc.

I hadn't looked at giant as we don't stock them in store, but Ill definatley have a look at them. Im looking at spending in the œ1500 region as Im a bike whore, and I will end up upgrading no matter what, so was looking for a better main build to base the upgrades on.
At the moment Im really like the look of the spec stumpjumper, but am still unsure about supension! so any advice on that, is full sus worth it etc etc.

I think for 1500, yeah full sus is worth it.
My stumpjumper is excellent and I can't really fault it, but I can't help but thinking I should have shopped around more before settling on the stumpy. There's alot of good, full-build bikes at this price range; Giant trance/anthem, trek Fuel EX, kona dawg/kikapu etc. Coiler maybe if you want something more agressive?
Try and test ride as many as you can to get an idea of the different geometries (sp?)
You could always go for a really light, pimped hardtail which could be a good option?
Also, you could probably pick up a bargain for an older model bike but this might not be an option from where you want to buy.

Me I'd go for the Cannondale Caffine. Prob the best factory Hard Tail out there IMO!0
-
trance for all day riding and anthem for racing /short rides. Have both and love 'em.0

maybe the trek fuel? The stumpy is always a safe bet though.
but if you want a ahrdtail, lokk at the giant xtc c3. carbon composite frame! - http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/index ... search=527
