they use solidworks and rhino i think, as well as cs2 and cad/cam stuffs.

yeah, i was thinking more on the diagram side. for the ultimate in 3D effects, use Paint with a mouse and teh spray paint.

The marine engineering company I was at last week use AutoCAD for most of their drawings.

I was also shown this other 3D modelling program which the naval architects use to get an idea of the stress and forces on the ships/
