I'm looking to spend a little bit upgrading my lad's bike ... which will work our cheaper than me getting him a new one. Bearing in mind my budget stretching to little more than some minor imporovements, what would you think is/are in most need of an upgrade please?

I'm in a similar situation - the wifes got an 05 Hardrock XC which used to be mine.
Worst thing on these bikes are the forks - you can get Tora 302's for about œ90 if you search around - I think these would be a brilliant upgrade. If he's still using the original pedals then maybe some V8's or similar would be a good investment too.0 -
You wont find many forks that are a worthwhile upgrade from the MZs for under œ150. The Marzocchi MX Comps do spring to mind but you will have to pay for fitting as well (unless of course you are familliar with bike maintanence).
I'd be buying something like this. Excellent price on top notch brakes. You get everything you need to simply pull off the old brakes and whack on these new ones. Its an easy job and it only needs a 5mm allen key to do.
Alternatively, you could buy a new gearing set up for him. www.wiggle.co.uk do excellent deals on that kinda thing. Look at these products:
"2007 XT 761 REAR MECH"
"SHIMANO XT 9 SPEED CASSETTE (11-32 & chain)"
"XT 761 SHIFTERS"
"SHIMANO XT 9 SPEED FRONT MECH (conventional)"
I think that comes to bang on your budget, allowing for postage. It would be an excellent upgrade to any bike.

i have a HR, and i would seriously recommend changing the forks, even if you blow the whole budget on them. The MZ's are fine for a while, but they soon start to rattle and squeak and die.
I have had no problem with the brakes, and although i only have the back gears left (through choice) i don't see any need to replace gears

would you think that the forks on a HARDROCK SPORT WOMEN'S HYD DISC be worth upgrading/what do you think of them. (RST Gilla Plus T7 fork)0 -
how are the rims? buying new rims could make a large improvement, however you won't get anything amazing for œ150, but CRC do some good deals on whole wheelsets right now.
Forks would be a good upgrade, but being Marzocchi, unless you treat them badly, shouldnt be urgent...
small things such as pedals, new mech etc. can make a nice difference to the feel of the bike.Uncooked Prawn0 -
my friend had some RST's a while back, and they were really soft and the rebound wasn't damped. If it's for anything more that gentle XC i would replace them. I don't know much about serious XC, but i suspect you would be better replacing them for that as well.
T: as far as rims go, the Sun Ditch Witch (now called something else) on mine that came as standard are fine. I ride 4X and haven't bent them yet

my lass rides one of these,
I have changed the drivetrain to XT, forks to bomber airs, saddle, stem, brakes, just need a set of lighter wheels now and it will be alot better suited to xc.. they are a bit weighty and cumbrsome as std..
most of the parts have come off my stumpy as I have upgraded, so has cost nothing to upgrade it..
