I am very new to this! is the UI fairly straight forward? Just looked on the website, is the main download link the Live CD one? Or is there a specific version for it

The main download is the LiveCD, and also has an option to install to the hard drive, which is cool.

Yes, the UI's straight forward. Makes more sense than Windows at least.

Ok, cheers. Downloading now. If i decide to keep it, is it going to wipe my harddrive? or just the windows partition?

If it's already partitioned, then if you install it you can identify which is the partitiion that's got files you want to keep on and just install it on another one.

If you tell it to wipe your hard drive, it'll do that.
If you tell it to wipe the Windows partition, it'll do that.
If you tell it to resize your windows (or another) partition and use the resulting free space, it'll do that.

Nah, it's just that it's been thought through. And they didn't release it til they finished it.

Unlike that other major OS 'vendor'...

In general, yes. If you can't get it working in Wine or one of its offshoots, there's probably a free clone of it.

For most popular software, both are true.

    What've you got in mind?

Yeah, they're all based off Wine.

Cedega's good for games, CrossoverOffice is better for normal apps (MS Office, Photoshop, iTunes etc.).

The latter two are pay-for software, though. If it'll work on either of them, I'm told that means Wine can be persuaded to run them.

Not really. You can use wine or it's offshoots, but performance is sluggish and unreliable. IF you aren't interested in gaming, there are free clones for everything you could want.
