Yeah im new. My dads just recently bought a Specialized Hardrock pro, and ive been out in the woods and trails and stuff around my area, bought the magazines and ive now realised that this is something im interested in.So does anyone have any recommendations for bikes or tips for riding?. For the bike i want something that can do a bit of everything like downhill, dirt jumping, cross-country etc.. I like the hardrock that my dad has but it is too heavy and i prefer light bikes so i can jump stuff (i used to BMX). Not sure if this is the right place for the post. But any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Jonny

I'd prefer something more off-road and with disk-brakes.Or is the giant a good off-roader?. What do you think of Specialized Rockhopper? thanks a lot.Specialized Big hit (custom build, nearly done!)0

at the ent of the day its all down to personal preference....the stp's more dj orientated really
i think you shoulld go to some bike shops and take a look around at what you can get for your budget then come back and way up the differences
but before u do that click my linky!

the stp is designed for Street/Trail/Park so it will be totally unsuitable for what you are saying you are wanting to do.
400 is not much and light costs money. if you are happy with your dads then get the same.

The specialised hardrock is usually what 90% of the decent forum members will tell you to get if you're starting out biking.
The STP is a jumping/skate park style bike.
I believe the rockhopper is more of a straight cross country bike, the hardrock is probably the most versatile bike you can get with your budget.0 -
I went to a bike shop and found a specialized rockhopper, whiched i liked. But the shops near me only stock Trek's, specialized, and giantSpecialized Big hit (custom build, nearly done!)0

If you want a bike to be light and strong, its going to cost money.
If you want it to be light, you probably could get a cheap, light bike, but it will be pretty weak, and if you want a strong, cheap bike, its going to be heavy.
For the things you want to do, a Hardrock is probably your best bet, since a rockhopper is more XC orientated.

Buy second hand....go check the bike out before you buy..bikemagic.com or e-bay
try and make sure they have the reciept for the frame and forks for warranty issues in case you break it..
i bought an 04 enduro from bikemagic classified..i cracked the frame and got a brand new 06 enduro s-works as a replacement..
damn good idea that one
thumbs up for second hand

On your budget, and with what you want to do, get the Hardrock. If you find it heavy, ride it more and more till you get fitter and stronger, then you wont notice the weight.

wtf?! the spesh hardrock is not heavy.
hi peepshi peeps0 -
what about:
kona blast from evans œ399
Mongoose fireball œ399 more jump orientated
Scott voltage YZ1 disk also œ399
GT avalanche 2.0 2007 disk or 1.0 2006
GT chucker 2.0
Gary Fisher Bitter for œ449
Hope this helps the GTs are normally good starter bikes.
http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/1306399/0 -
Yeah i was looking at GT avalanche 2.0 and the chucker. My dad said he'd put money to so i have like an extra 100-200 quid to play with. I don't want the bike to be too jump orientated as i prefer just screaming down trails and stuff. The bikes i have taken an interest too are-
GT Chucker 2.0
GT Avalanche 2.0
Maybe the Scott Voltage YZ1 disk but not sure.
and the Specialized Rockhopper disk
Anyone own or owned these bikes got any info on em, also would changing parts on bike make it lighter by or lot, or is it pretty pointless? thanks a lot, JonnySpecialized Big hit (custom build, nearly done!)0 -
