Thoughts on SC Heckler...?

Hi all,

I may be able to get a late 05 (built in the US, with the reinforced headtube) SC Heckler, with Fox RP23 shock, in almost nick (owner takes real good care of it), for œ550.
Now, Im pretty sure thats a real good price right?

But, my main question, is its suitability for me.
I ride pretty much everything; DJ, XC (not too fussed on weight, only go uphill for the DHs), trails, mild FR/DH. I even do the odd bit of street/skate (only like the occasional quarter/wallride/stair drop e.t.c.).

So, do you think the Heckler will be OK for this?

Thing is, I am looking to try out proper DH (proper british track, very rocky and rooty) (check out www.foeldhriders.co.uk), will this frame be OK for that?

I am currently riding a GT Ruckus (see sig), and would be putting on the Heckler;
05 Marz Z1 FR (either 130 or 150mm)
Saint cranks/BB
Juicy7s
Deore/XT/SRAM drivetrain
721s on Pro2s
Random other tat (DMR chainguide e.t.c.).

Now, do you think this frame, with the above stuff, will be OK?
I was kinda looking at the Enduro/SX Trail, but Ive heard they have problems with snapping chainstays?

Oh, the frames a medium (18")(my current frames a 17), Im about 5'10", and weigh 140lb.

Any thoughts would be appreciated [:D]

For full on DH your gonna need something stronger than a heckler

Not proper racing, but just going to the DH tracks with mates.
I know its obviously not going to be as good as a 8" rig, but will it be vaguely OK?

I think it'll be fine for all the things you want to do on it. Even the DH sections. Youre used to riding a HT at the moment so that'll count towards it, taking the better lines etc.

Bottom line, you'll be fine, just dont go mad on it.

It will be fine. Most of the uk's trails can be ridden with a alll mountain full suss. It has 6" of rear wheel travel which is fine.

Hecklers are bloody strong.. should be more than fine.

Though i'd say that price seems a bit steep... for a bike over 2 years old...
My mate was just telling me the other day how he could get a brand new one at trade (what the shops pay) price for just œ660...

I'd pay no more than œ400 ideally. I suppose it does have an RP23 shock which will have been an expensive upgrade.

Thanks for the replies everyone [:)]

How would you say it would be on dirtjumps? Like Delamere...?
Im used to being able to REALLY pump the jumps on my Ruckus, can you do that on a FS? Maybe lock the shock out?

Yeah you should be able to whack 'em. If the shock has a lockout then all the better. I suggest you will have no regrets at all buying a heckler as it is one of the most capable all-rounder bikes available. It pedals so damn well.

Consider holding off and looking for a frame with a platform coil shock such as a 5th element or fox 5.0

The Heckler is an absolutely fantastic bike but I definitely wouldn't say it's a full-on DH bike or a dirtjumper.
It probably almost defined the term All-Mountain bike before someone made up the category.
If you're looking for a bike which can handle most things the trail can throw at you with ease then a Heckler with 150mm-160mm forks up front is a good choice up there along with the best of them like the Spesh Enduro/SX Trail.
It would certainly eat Delamere for breakfast but the max recommended fork travel on a 05 Heckler is around 155mm so that should tell you not to bother putting massive forks on it.
If you want a do everything full-susser though, the Heckler is a great choice

    Nice one.

Well my forks can be either 130 or 150.
Ive heard it handles amazing at 130, and can put to 150 for big stuff.

Deffo, you won't be disappointed by the Heckler.
Handles great at 150 or 160mm travel too, you just feel it can handle anything you ride over.
The single pivot suspension design is very simple, low maintenance and extemely efficient.

Spent the last couple of days doing a heck of a lot of climbing on it, some 4 ft drops to flat about town and launching myself down a few intense rock drops. This in addition to a few small doubles, plenty road link-up sections and tarmac climbs and it has been up there doing anything but holding me back. Wonderful bikes! *sigh*

    Sounds good.

When I say Delamere, I also mean the big DJs, would a fully be OK on them?

Yup it will be cool. Got a mate who does DJs on his, not deliberately but as part of a longer loop when we pass the jumps!
