Have I been scammed?

On Descent-world I bought a wheel off a person and off the cheque went. 2 weeks later I emailed and asked him nicely what's going on.
He explained he had lost the cheque and I agreed to cancel it.

I then cancelled the cheque and payed him via paypal, I got an email confirming the money had been sent to his account. 2 more weeks pass and I ask him where the wheel is, he says he's waiting for the money, but will post it tomorrow.

A week after this I ask him wether he has posted it, he replies by saying he has not recieved any money but has found the cheque and can he use that instead.

I tell him the cheque has been cancelled and I have already sent him the money via paypal.

There's been no reply to this and I'm fed up and either want my wheel or the money back. Is there any way of getting the paypal money back, or do I need to go round to his house and paint his windows black?

Paypal disputes are supposed to be easy (although I've never had to do it)

My parents had this problem though eBay.. Over a Ipod Nano.
We one a bid on a Ipod Nano which was surprisingly cheap and paid through PayPal. Anyways we all think its going to be coming and then the next day find a Email from eBay saying that the item was stolen!! We were well p!ssed off! It also said in the letter that we could not get our money back or something as its a private seller.
However the item did come after 3 days and was not a scam at all.

I don't deserve to have a sig..

you can easily check if he has accepted the money through paypal, just do that. If he has accpeted you can go break his legs and if he hasn't, go break his legs anyway.

Yes there is. Just file a dispute procedure on paypal. I got my money back from some gay on ebay after about 2 weeks.

EDIT: although now I think about it, that might just be for ebay
