USB Modem Connection Sharing

I have a USB Broadband Modem, that only has a DSL socket, and one other port for the USB cable, if i were to get a splitter and run two USB cables off this one modem, would that work?

Failing that, i guess i would have to get an Ethernet modem?

Nah I'm fairly sure it wouldn't. I'd recommend getting an Ethernet modem/router as above, but if you're really desperate to use it on more than one PC, Internet Connection Sharing?

But I guess you've thought of that and dismissed it for whatever reason...

1 signal dived over two cables = shit signal, even if it worked.

    No.

Ethernet is a packet switched network. In order to function, wherever you split a line up to share between two hosts you need a packet switch of some sort (like a hub or a router).

No-one makes one for USB, because no-one in their right mind uses USB for networking.

I've been told USB modems should never work in the first place, they just use a software bodge. As of Windows Vista onwards, they won't be supported at all anymore.

  • We only use it because BT sent it to us for free!
So, basically, i need a Ethernet modem? Will a cheap one do? I've seen some for like œ25.

yeah, a cheap one will be fine as long as you get a modem/router, the router allows two or more PCs to use the modem via an ethernet connection.
