Yay, nothing wrong with xp. If your not especially into computers, linux is pointless, any other windows OS isn't so great.

  • Well, i have had 6 years of constant Windows use, i think i will stick to what I know.

But if i can't *aquire* a copy of XP from somewhere, i'll give Linux a whizz.

Presuming people who are not especially into computers are likely to set up their firewalls well, be sensible in their surfing, be able to circumvent MS's genuine advantage thing, manually patch their OS, like the idea of hunting down software from all over the net, be willing to adapt the OS so it runs OK on older hardware, yeah, I'd agree with that.

Not sure i'd agree with the assumptions, though.

I've got a degree in computer science and yet I use XP even after doing my degree in linux. I look at all kinds of nonsense on the internet, pay no heed to my firewall or anyother setings for that matter, I dont think i've downloaded a patch this year.

and yet my laptop works perfectly along with all its software and is perfectly adequate.

I think the key point here is that I am not a geek.

Anyone who is computer literate can keep any OS secure and stable. It's really not hard to do.
The majority of computer users are't computer literate, and so cant do it without constant reminders to patch software. They also tend to expect computers to be fast and responsive.

I'd suggest that the latter are able to make decisions for themselves and so can ignore me if they particularly want to arse about persuading a pirate copy of XP to work. I'd also suggest the former might be more interested in something that's free and just works on older hardware. Even if they don't want to use it, what's the harm in telling them it exists?

But I'd still suggest it's easier to just use Linux. It has got an awful lot more windows-user-friendly since you graduated (presuming that was >~5 years ago).

I've run XP on an AMD 586 200MHz processor with no more than 64Mb of RAM. It's do-able, in fact the computer then ran faster and smoother than it did under Windows 98SE.

  • I'm quite considering Linux now...

Is it fit and forget, and do programs some with installers etc?

cAos Linux could be quite good, lightweight for older hardware apparently.

There's three ways of installing software on Linux in general:

The vast majority of pieces of software you can install with your package manager. You can either use the graphical one, where you get a searchable list of everything available, or on the command line where you issue a command and the package name and it installs it. Everything that's part of Gnome or KDE you can generally get this way, and also everything that's popular and free.

Slightly harder is the more windowsy way, where you've got to find the website of the project, download an installer file (.deb or .rpm normally, depending on your distro) then run the downloaded package. You'll do this if you have slightly odd but reasonable tastes in software. Needs to be done for Limewire, Opera and a few other things.

The hardest is compiling, which still really isn't that difficult. It's the Linux equivalent of a typical windows install in that it gives you loads and loads of options on how the program works and is installed. I've never _had_ to compile anything. You'll do this if you're writing the software, want to alter it or are trying to use a very un-tested piece of software.

Though do bear in mind that it is a fairly complete OS immediately post-install. Generally there isn't one tool to do something with, theres four or five.
