Helmet cam - I fall off alot

I have decided to get a helmet cam to capture some of my falls for posterity.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a good setup? Obviously I want to keep the cost down so the wife doesn't bend the ear too much, but I don't want to compromise quality to save a few quid.

I have looked at the camera below, œ100 is cheap but I expect the quality is below par.

http://www.firebox.com/product/1732?src ... id=gadgets

Apart from that it seems about œ400 for a dogcam (or the like as alot seem to be 'used by the BBC')and something to record on.

Any help welcome.

in general, the more you spend, the better it will be. buying something "because its cheap" will only end in poor quality videos.

The sample videos for the tonyhawk camera look amazing, but I bet they are from the other pricier products. The samples look to good to be true :(

I was looking into the ActionCam and the Tony Hawk camera.

The Action Cam seems better quality (both build and video quality).

However, a few things struck me.

The best resolution is only 640x480
There is no screen on them. (So you could end up just filming the floor because you can't tell what the camera is pointing at exactly until you view the footage)
What is the point of recording something in poor quality? Surely if we're going to go to the trouble of getting cool videos, we should at least be able to watch them back in decent quality?

To that end, I'm on the look out for a decent priced video camera with analogue video inputs and a DogCam.....

Saracen Mantra with Marzocchi MX Pro ETA\'s, 24-7 Silverstar pedals... and a map holder.

640*480 is fine. PAL ie our TV resolution is only 720*576 so its not far off that. Ensure they do 25-30 frames per second. Ignore anything thats less than this or only does 320*240 resolution or something. Some sort of image stabilisation would be useful for when riding else it will become a jerk fest and not that good kind

I agree. The Tony Hawk cam looks like its very good value for money through those sample videos.

mbukjames - THe video samples are the same whatever camera setup you pick form the site so I bet they are from the high end stuff, not the cheapy tonyhawk one. Would be nice to know for sure.

But they do give great quality, especially on the falling off demo which is just what i want!

If it is advertised as footage from the Tony Hawke cam then by law it should be footage from the Tony Hawke cam or else the company could face a possible claim for misrepresentation. Just a thought...

Ah, but that is on YouTube, which is horrendously compressed!

The info for the tony hawke one says its only 15fps so a waste of time and the other one seems to have no or very little image stabilisation. (Youtube compression is irrelevant for my points there). I have yet to see a cheap and good quality solution for this sort of thing. In my competition car I run a normal size dv camera on a mount which is fine but obviously not really pratical to have a massive camera like that strapped to your helmet! :)

Thats the Oregon Scientific I think. Does that record onto internal memory or onto a camera? I'm really crap with this stuff.

abdul - I think I am going to have to stump up for a pricey setup that is durable as well.

All the cheaper ones seem to be ok, but not the quality I want.

Now all I need is a cast iron reason to convince the wife!

Tsawyer "With a 2Gb (maximum) SD card, recording times at highest resolution are approximately 60 mins" uses a SD card like a lot of cameras, 2Gb one probably cost you œ15 or something off ebay
