carb timing

the car has, what i believe to be, a twin choke webber,

when It hits 4200rpm i get an extra boost of power, i'm presuming this is due to the seccond choke opening up fully / more

is there any way to get it to open a bit earlier, say 3800rpm to make the extra power a bit mroe usable?

Surely it would be computer controlled?

  • It's a Mk1 fezzy innit?

Is there no visible cable or like latch that when the throttle cable goes so far, it starts pulling on the other choke?

Could have linkage between the two chokes.

RV, if it's a twin choke weber, then it is more than likely a weber 28/36 DCD.
It's a carb that basically acts as two, but unfortunately because it's only one, you can't play with the "timing". The second choke opens at roughly 3/4 throttle so that when you put your foot down, you have some more juice. This is the carb that I have to go on the imp eventually.

However, you say that when you get to 4200rpm, you get a power boost. This is unlikely to be related to the carb, because the only thing controlling when the second shoke opens is how heavy your right foot is. Sounds more like you have a bit of a flatspot in the rev range

The only way to get it to open earlier would be to modify the linkage between the two yourself. This is going to be a nobber to explain but I'll try anyway....

The primary choke is attached to the throttle cable. As it opens, part of the linkage moves along a slider till roughly 2/3 or 3/4 when it reaches the end of it's little track and starts to open the secondary throttle.
It you be fairly simple to mod it, by simply shortening the distance the primary part of th linkage moves- Just shorten the track of the slider basically. If I wasn't locked up I could show you a photo because mine is in my room in Leeds...

As I say however, if its rev dependant and not where your right foot is, it's unlikely to have anything to do with the timing between the chokes. If you've got a flatspot, there could be a number of different reasons. Check the dizzy and dizzy cap, rotor arm, coil, plugs and vacuum advance (if you have one?) all things electric basically including the timing (in fact do that anyway). If you're not getting a spark at the right time then you're not going to get ther performance you should.

Could also try increasing the size of the primary main jet to get a bit more poke when it's acting on just the one. The only other, slightly more extreme option that I can think of at the moment is changing camshafts, but I doubt you want to do that

Beware that modding the linkage to get the second choke to open up earlier may say balls to your fuel economy

technically computers were invented arround 1942 in a hut in bletchly

i know someone who got very good at correcting computer code with a stanley knife

no, its nothing to do with engine management (that'd be my right foot) or any computer kind of thing, the car is too old

    yes it is the fiesta

i've already said, its a twin choke webber based on the info i have.
