Collar bone #

Was out at the weekend with a mate, sadly he had a wee crash and fractured his collar bone. Any idea how long it'll take before he will be back on his bike again?

Took me two weeks when I did mine last Summer. It was painful when I started riding again but you soon forget that

This isn't a doctors forum think you should check with a GP?

I could ride my road bike very gently after about three weeks but i'd say at least four to five for a mtb and even then fairly gently as you don't want to jar it.0

Wish mine had been that kind. Total snap, months before I could use the arm for anything. Couldnt ride for 18 months as by the time I could use it, the muscles were totally shot and took a long, long time to get them back. Wake up in pain if ive slept on that shoulder badly as well. Stupid big tree that didnt bend!!!

It's a difficult bone, healing wise. A clean fracture will take anything from 4-6 weeks to heal with the tissue damage caused taking longer than that. A more difficult break or anything with displacement will take double or more time.
Using it before it's properly healed will do you a lot of damage that will prolong your healing time.
Listen to your doctor/physio!

No do not listen to your doctors as they are a bunch of idiots in my opinion. After numerous requests they refused to plate mine even though it snapped right through and one side was much higher than the other where the shoulder moved. It took about 3 months before new bone even started forming between the 2 bits as it was so big then a lot, lot longer before there was a join. Having to sleep sitting up right in a chair for the first 4 weeks due to how much it was all moving was not fun!
It was about time I broke something riding though. Did think it was my frame from the noise when it went but then a couple of minutes later it dawned on me that I couldnt move my arm (shock meant no pain at that point). Riding out of Friston forest one armed like that was a bit tedious though!

Just found the photo I took of my X ray. This was ~3 months after doing it. I have circled the two ends of the bone, note how they overlap by an inch, one above the over with a nice big gap in between but apparently this was fine and ok to leave to heal by itself. Fckwits! [:(!][:(!][:(!]

Yeh ive broke my collar bone to. Neary three weeks since i did it now. Was back on the bike in about 2weeks but just gentle stuff. Im going to wait for the full six weeks that the doctor said before i go back to dirt jump and DH. The pain is nothing compared with the boredom that follows.haha

Broke my collar bone last September and the jagged bit severed a nerve to my arm, they grafted a new bit in but still waiting for it to heal, in the mean time it makes riding a bike unusual as I dont have use of various muscles in that arm/shoulder/wrist/fingers!
On the plus side I got to add some new scars to my collection.
