Aggressor Bracket

Hi
Just looking for a bit of advice and any thoughts really...
The gears on my sons new (1 month old) GT aggressor were a bit noisy and slipping but rather than taking it back to Halfords under gaurantee I popped it into the LBS as I was in there for other things. Unfortunately they said it will never be perfect as the bottom bracket is too short... I plan on taking back to Halfords tomorrow but not sure what I should expect as they have probably sold hundreds of these to people that never knew there was a problem.
Should they replace the bottom bracket? the bike? or just say sorry?
What do you think?

I would have thought the gaurantee/warrantee woul cover it - if the BB is too short, then the bike isn't fit for purpose, and so breaks the Sale of Goods Act? I think thats the right one, it certainly breaks one of them if it isn't fit for purpose
