go midweek during term time. If I had to wait in weekend queues I would just sack it off and go home, not even remotely worth it. And yes, the hotels are expensive.

alton towers sucks for que times. most the rides are up to a hour by lunch time. get ther quick and go straight to oblivion and rita. the best two imo. then be prepared to que after that

edit: as for acommadation i would expect it to be expensive in alton towers. theres surley a b&B close by

Some places like lastminute.com can do bookings on the hotel there.
