Thoughts on upgrade v buying new bike

I have a 2004 Std Rockhopper (V brake model) and am weighing up whether to upgrade using current bike, getting new fork then disc brakes in due course, or selling for say œ200-250 and buying new bike around œ500 which will have a better fork and disc brakes?
I really like the current bike so tempted to upgrade but is it getting outdated now in terms of quality?
In 2004 it was arguably one of the best œ500 hardtails, upgraded now with fork and discs would it still hold it's own? hmmm

things wouldn't have mjorly progressed in regards to your frame.
Upgrade- you also have experience on how it handles.Too enthusiastic about biking for my friends...want to ride somewhere in the SE? TELL ME!!! hamsterscanswim@hotmail.com - and yes they can!0 -
UPgrade cos it's really fun getting new bit and adding them on. I had the same dillema with my Orange Clockwork. Upgrading is great too cos if you decide later to get a new frame you can and it's no biggy.0

Spending œ250 on some new forks will massively improve the bike. Selling and buying a new one seems like a bit of a loss.

Glad you said that, I like the idea of upgrading and seeing it through. Was just worried the A1 frame was getting outdated, but sure it has a few more years in it yet!0

Upgrade, you'll get a better spec that way.

Cool.....so apart from Forks and Disc brakes, what else would you recommend I look at upgrading in due course?
Spec attached

Make sure your frame and wheels will take disc brakes before starting on the upgrade route.0

The bike is fully disc ready - made sure when buying it was upgradable. It was supposed to be a v good frame back in 2004, so assume still good now too.0

Gearing. A decent set of shifters and mechs with some nice cables really does make riding so much nicer.

I thought Deore / Lx was reasonable mix at this level....even now?0

When it wears out I'd replace it with XT/XTR.
Your current stuff is workhorse standard; it gets the job done. The more upmarket gearing works makes such a difference compared to it.
