But you couldn't ride a 'true' retro bike.
With Alu degrading over 5 or so years it would be unsafe.

I reckon that's bullcrap. My rig's mainframe is 8 years old now, and still going strong, even after stacking hard enough to snap a swingarm.
Lifetime warranty on the frame, in fact.

Not old enough!

But nice though. I still miss my '99 FSR.

Well if that's the case, I'll get another frame, lifetime guaranteed[:)]

However. I have never heard of this before. I've made the point before that there are fighter planes made of the same alloy, which were made in the 60/70s, still going strong.
I'm dubious.
Where did you find out about the short lifetime of aluminium?

Engineering college.

Am on the final year of my engineering aprenticeship. Those planes you talk about if stil in use will be undergoing constant maintenance and repairs to cracks are done all the time,

Im pretty sure if a crack is found they drill either end of it to stop it spreading.

Are you sure the Marin in your sig (if thats the frame your talking about) has a lifetime warranty? TBH I thought it was just the pivot bearings that were meant to last a lifetime.

Old marins had a lifetime warranty on everything.

The 5 years thing isn't a fact, it's a guesstimate based on the fact that ali fatigues. TBH, most ali frames now will last a hell of a lot longer than that.

I did engineering in college too, including metallugry and I was never taught that T6 treated aluminium weakens over time. In fact, one of the attractive things about alloys such as 6061 was that they have pretty much as long a lifetime as other common metal blends used in engineering, but a much higher strength to weight ratio than most.

Anyway, the frame does indeed have a lifetime warranty. You only used to get it on the 6061 marins, the 7000 series alloy frames only had 5 years.
I've already had a cracked swingarm (one of those nasty crashes) replaced under warranty, about 3 years after I had it.

The planes, such as the F-16 (started production in 1976) will of course have had constant maintenance, but the superstructure will be original. It is made from very similar materials to modern mountain bikes, although not quite as refined, if anything!

EDIT:
the bearings also have a lifetime warranty, but I think I've been going through roughly 1 set per 9 months on average!
